How did RE4 look so good for 2005? Nothing else was nearly on this level especially for a GameCube title.

Built for GC which is significantly more powerful than the more popular PS2. Same for OG Xbox the games made for it (Ninja Gaiden for example) looked way better than PS2 games which were jaggy interlaced messes.

Mostly quality art direction. Also small environments, enemy AI is disabled when offscreen to save resources, and it's letterboxed and ran at 30fps (Order 1886 was panned for doing the same).

It was designed from the ground up for the Gamecube which was a pretty impressive machine when not hamstrung by the cookie sized discs, a beefier machine than the PS2 in many ways. Also most people don't remember this anymore but the original Gamecube release had a forced letterbox, no doubt so the game rendered less on the screen. There's not even a proper 16:9 mode if you played on a widescreen you just got black bars on the sides as well.

Resident Evil 4 actually had black bars like this, it had "widescreen" presentation in a 4:3 format

I love MGS2, but you're fucking delusional to think that. The textures and models in that game are primitive in comparison- with the sole advantage being how it ram at 60fps while RE4 was 30fps.
