Going past 480p was absolutely unnecessary. People only did it because LCDs were such bad quality that it needs pixel count to make up for it. But a CRT at 480p looks just as good as a 4K display at the same size. LCD was a scam and is the sole reason why everything after the PS2 had to be enormously expensive and overpowered. It was a trick to get good goys to throw out their perfectly good TV sets for Chinese trash.

Nah, PS4 is where it needed to stop. This is where the graphics to value proposition is maxed. Everything past this runs into drastically diminishing returns, and definitely not worth the extra money and development time. Hard to tell a PS4 game from a PS5 one anyways.

There's something about sixth gen characters that just works and was already lost in translation by seventh gen. MGS, Monster Hunter, Silent Hill and ResiEvil, they all have a certain look where they look realistic enough but are slightly stylized in a way that isn't uncanny.

I'm a retard, but I feel like the limitations of past era inspired a lot of creativity on its own. Coupled with the creativity of the minds of the time as well.
I can look back at PS2 era and earlier games I've never seen before and still say they look charming and good, but fidelity or whatever gay word gets used doesn't matter for shit to me. Every game could look like a Gameboy Color game or god damn Cogmind and I'd be perfectly content so long as the gameplay was good.
Every day I regret upgrading this fucking computer. If this GPU dies, I'm unironically downgrading. Fucking worthless.

It's because games back then were filled with great artists and people who were enthusiastic about the stories they were telling, even if it was niche and janky and didn't sell well, at least the games were earnest.
They kept making fantastic games and experimenting until the industry became too popular and formulaic for its own good.

Today if you make an experimental game it's almost assuredly a flop.

PS2 games often aged very well because they look highly stylised (they had to be with the tech devs had available) while also not being so old that everything looks like surreal abstract nonsense like on the PS1. Then PS3 went all in on realism even though it still wasn't quite there yet either so we ended up with a lot of grey, brown, forgettable looking miserable shit.

Seventh gen, probably. PS2, not so much. Bunch of PC/Gamecube/OG Xbox games that looked beautiful but never received PS2 ports because they were simply too demanding on the hardware: Half Life 2, VTMB, Morrowind, etc. And the games that did end up receiving PS2 ports were often ridiculed for looking awful in comparison to their GameCube/Xbox/PC counterparts, just look at Resident Evil 4. The PS2 was a great console that pushed above its weight class, but if we were to be locked to a single hardware baseline/era forever I'd still rather be locked to early 2000s PC hardware. Source looked fucking fantastic, and still does.
