It was HD, initially had full backwards compatibility, and supported Blu-ray, DVD, VCD, SuperCD, CDs, SD cards, Magic Sticks, and CompactFlash Card readers. Not to mention they didn't YLoD as often as the 360 did because the PS3 had better cooling. Yes it still did have the same GPU heating problems but it was not nearly as bad. Kutaragi and his team were just very good engineers. PS3's held up longer.
