Modern MMO-like games keep trying to fix the genre with better combat, but I think they're solving the wrong problem. The core appeal of an MMO is a persistent world where players depend on each other. That means meaningful professions, player-driven economies, horizontal progression, social identity, and risk:reward -- not another treadmill of leveling, bind-on-pickup gear, and disposable content. People don't log into MMOs just to press buttons. They log in because the world and the other players matter.
MMOs are fun>inb4 fpbp
>I'm perfectly describing what Albion Online is but I won't play it because uuuh you can't rotate the camera
Eve does that but itsZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
>>741905208>No leveling.Lull.
>>741905403Not true.
>>741906005Albion doesn't have a character level, but it absolutely has leveling. It just calls it Fame and puts it on the Destiny Board. You still grind XP to unlock higher tiers and gain combat and profession power. It's still fundamentally a progression-heavy MMORPG.
Bot thread.
>>741905329EVE's pretty fun in a group setting. If I had people to play with all the time and a good opponent corp, I would probably play it over WoW some months.
>>741904134>better combatThey don't though. It's always some retarded attempt at simplistic actionslop that doesn't work for the genre to begin with.
>>741908848Korean games, GW 2, Wildstar, ESO, Lost Ark, New World. I wouldn't say it's all bad. I really liked New World.
>>741909165The only game from that list with nice combat is LA and it's a lobby game, not a MMO.
L2R Signature server is now on Interlude. Still 1x and still full of soul.
>>741910172WoW phases players. Is it not an MMO?
>>741911025Let's just say it started bad trends in the industry.
>>741911025Modern WoW isn't even a videogame anymore.
>>741911025it really isnt
>>741904134In the two decades I've been playing MMORPGs the most pro-social game I've played then and now is still RuneScapeI liked New World and I wish it would've succeeded, the gathering was really nice and the game had a lot of potentialI hope in the future a studio makes an MMO that's like RuneScape or Elder Scrolls and has lots of social interaction, maybe even proximity chatWhat I would enjoy is hopping on to chop some trees or fish and to just chill talking to other players in voice chatThen maybe load the fish/logs/ore into a horse-driven wagon and ride it back to the bank, like in Crimson Desert, enjoying a scenic journeyJust do this over and over again. Then go to a general store and sell what I've gathered for gold.

>>741905329Yeah but its more "Comfy until that 1% of the time you literally shit yourself from adrenaline and now you cant sleep"Game's come a ways the last few years after it almost died during covid scarcity, but its still got a big multiboxxer problem like every other MMO has.
ff14 really has the makings of being the best but they absolutely refuse to add any content to the world, fates and hunts are hardly enough too as it stands
Play GW1. Its now F2P and on Mobile.
>>741914175I'll look into this. What's the class breakdown?
>>741915227Each classes is way too extensive due to how much things you can do with each class, so here is the tldr>WarriorMelee class with the highest starting armor rating. Does spike damage with axe, consistent damage with sword, or knockdown and control with Hammer.>ElementistUse elemental magic. Air is spike, usually single target damage, Fire is AoE and burning, Water is slow and hexes, and Earth is knockdown and ward protection.>RangerYou use a bow, or exploit the Expertise Attribute and use any other marital weapon. Can use pets.>NecromanerYou create minions, use cold damage relating to death, hexes, or support by giving other members energy via blood sacrifices.>MonkHealer and Protector class. Has a Smiting for ignore armor damage, but not as powerful as the next class Ill mention>MesmerClass of interrupting your enemies. Make them damage themselves for doing anything. Has some of the best ignore armor magic damage spells. These are Faction Only Classes>AssassinFragile Melee class that goes in and out of combat range to do combo damage. Use Crit to get energy>RitualistAnother healer/protector class but also can branch to lighting damage or spirit summoning aka turret minion class. These are Nightfall Only Classes>ParagonShout at people to heal or support your allies while you chuck spears.>DervishMagical melee class that use Scythe. The closest thing to a paladin class.
drift city was the last truly unique mmo
>>741916330how does it feel that Forza took over that genre?
>>741916381my pc sucks so I can't play it but does it capture the feeling of grinding your ass off for a car and feeling fast and powerful because of your effort
The appeal is having a social space to talk with others. The game is secondary, an excuse to be there, background noise to fill luls in conversation. You can't talk with others because money stolen, so MMO have no appeal.
>>741906695its nutriments schizohes been at it for years
>>741916267Hmm interesting might see more about Paragon
>>741916631You can't talk to others because MMOs only give you a primitive text-only chatbox that most players remove from the UI because they use discord.MMOs are perfect for proximity voice chat but we can't have that.
>>741916267You can start as an Assassin and Ritualist in Nightfall.
