Why did RTS design largely move toward denser micro instead of richer strategy? Games like SupCom showed you could have massive economies, multi-front wars, land/air/sea, strategic weapons, and huge decision spaces without making the game about constant unit babysitting. It feels like the genre doubled down on mechanics instead of strategic scope.
>>
Broaden your horizons and try other games in the genre. There's a ton of RTS games that fill every niche. Do better.

Because Koreans are shit on a cultural level that's why. Their pay by the hour PC bang culture and execution obsession means they'll always gravitate to stupid shit.
>>
because at some point increasing skill expression can only be done through mechanical means. the strategy of how to optimally do things is figured out quickly

The devestation caused to the RTS genre by Leage of Legends is irreversable, much like WoW's effect on MMOs.

Because activizzard thought esports was going to be lucrative forever. Turns out that having players in your 'league' called spazzyfag69 and xxdarkseph1rothxx doesn't make for an experience a viewer can take seriously.
Should have forced the use of government names.

So what's the optimal route in SupCom on a 20km map with land, sea, and air?

I don't think player names are what tipped the scales against SC. I would say I don't think people can follow all the sci-fi names and roles in a meaningful way. At least SupCom has things like subs, frigates, battlecruisers, etc. You just say that frigates can't hit subs; battlecruisers counter destroyers but can be overrun by amounts because of tech-up time.

The Starcraft 2 competitive scene killed the genre because the skill of high level macro players made the game unacceptable to like 98% of the normie market. For a normal person it is not fun at all to be tabbing around a map like a maniac and calculating your click-rate. Making games like this is self-defeating because you're selling a game to a handful of people to play and millions to watch.

MOBAs are more accessible and the formula of having 4 other players on your team always excuses your lack of skill, it's comforting to know that you can always blame somebody else and that gives you some freedom to have fun

grand strategy split off into its own genre because rts hit a wall of complexity

Grand strategy predates RTS.

You could probably add unit abilities to the SupCom formula, but I don't think I would. It just needs tighter unit grouping and to have unit formations.
