They think of current customers as secured, "There is no need to appeal to this demographic, we already have them" is the mindset. However, there is a vocal push for uglier characters, much like the push for fatties in modeling. Here they see an opportunity; "if we put uggos and fatsos in, we'll appeal to this demographic too!". So of course they went all-in on trying to squeeze as many dollars as humanly possible out of as many people they could reach.This is why all these companies are now scrambling. They expected their loyal consumers to eat up anything, and they also expected to rake in more suckers with this new appeal, but the new consumers never showed up, and the audience they relied on mysteriously vanished after they stopped catering to them.
