Sea of Thieves desperately needs a reason to do anything. Why the fuck is the treasure so worthless?
Author's note: I have not played it in nearly a decade.

me either. I miss just running that one factions flag that marks you on everyone's map and just rolling up on people.
Having someone sail around in a circle for 20 mins while 3 of us sneak onto one of the ships outside of one of the forts or global events with powder kegs was the best.
>>
>>741910893
Sid Meier's Pirates! solved the genre. There's nothing to discuss.

there was a similar game that came out a year or so before SoT and it had so much better gameplay, just pure combat 20v20 or so.

I've only played the remake, but I'll check out Starsector.

I wish pirate fantasy was more of a thing. Krakens, voodoo shit, haunted ships, skeleton crews, all that shit.

Starsector is one of the best games ever made. One of the few games I revisit like every year.

Curse of the Black Pearl was the last hurrah of 90s blockbuster cinema, before CGI completely overtook everything instead of just being for a select few effects. Great film.
>>
>>741911016
There is a decent one that is not based on the movies. Like AC Black Flag lite before AC Black Flag.
>>
>>741912814
same, if i played them again right now they'd probably be even worse. so i'll leave them in my memory like that
>>
I wish there were more pirate games that focused more on the aesthetics and adventure than the ship part. The pirating stuff is cool but what makes the Pirates of the Caribbean movies fun is better captured by games like Uncharted than any pirate game. I want something like that but for pirates.

>>
>>741913612
Because in the 90s and early 2000s they still shot movies on film and CGI was used sparingly, even if it was used a bunch for certain scenes. Shooting on film and not using a green screen for every scene makes a massive difference. Think Lord of the Rings vs The Hobbit. Both used tons of CGI, but The Hobbit took it way too far.

>>
>>741914503
PvP is still in the game. There's just an option for a private mode where you don't fight others but I think you're also limited in actually earning rewards and unlocks.
>>
>>741914885
The latter. I have to assume it was baby's first open world game to a lot of people so they weren't burned out by the usual stuff yet. But if you're calling it "padded-out Ubislop" you will definitely think it's trash.
It was trash when it was new, let alone now that a lot of the tropes are considered tired even by the people who like that slop.
>>
>>741910893
Etrian Odyssey 3 is pretty cool.
>>
Maybe a pirate game requires a rebel studio to make it, not much rebellion in corporate settings nowadays.
Ubisoft sure doesn't want to rebel even a little so forget it.
>>
>>741914885
It's trash, the same as the rest of AssCreed. The only difference and the reason it's so fondly talked about is that there are (relatively brief) sailing and naval combat sections that are both comfy because your crew sings sea shanties (this was before they became viral on youtube and were shoved into fucking everything) and actually decently fun because the naval combat isn't terrible.
>>
>>741910893

As someone who just stopped playing, there still isn't shit to do unless you like pvp
At this point I won't be surprised if that game doesn't make it another year
Sucks too because the sailing in it is just about perfect, I would love a single player action adventure game set on a huge ocean with a ton of islands to explore with SoT's sailing. Shit like AC: Black Flag isn't that interesting to me, since while sailing you're controlling the ship and not your character sailing the ship
>>
>>741914885
The parts that aren't AC are legitimately good
The AC parts drag it down a ton but there's an actually decent pirate game underneath all that shit. If you know what you're in for it's worth playing, just temper your expectations.

It's not that the mystique of the world is gone, rather that people have been caring much less about upholding it anymore since second half of the 1800s. By the 1720s a majority of the world was mapped out. All of it had been colonized by some level of humanity. The quote is applicable to the homogenization and globalization of everything people held dear, freedoms and magic were dwindling to give way to civilization. When Jack was a kid he saw Atlantis, met mermaids, all other types of eldritch creatures, even encountered dinosaurs. Now anything that made the world unique is gone.

Yeah, interactions like that should be the norm, but it feels like a ton of people nowadays are too hesitant whenever you attempt to engage them in friendly company. I'll say, it's easier to strike up interests in an event, but anything off the cuff ends way quicker than it ought to

Even beyond that, the advancements in science and shifts in geopolitics during the 19th century fundamentally affected the way humanity itself viewed the world. In the most half assed way to summarize w/ vidya terms, it's the equivalent of optimizing the fun out of gameplay mechanics in order to establish the meta for a varied userbase. You can observe a few instances from that era onwards where humans attempted to uphold similar forms of mystique en masse, but these ultimately faltered when confronted in the face of such grim realities accompanying the basis of these perceptions. Most notable examples I can think of:
>worldwide view of Napoleon and France
>worldwide view of America
>reactions to WW1 and WW2 (though less for the latter)

Well, perhaps some of that is true in terms of geopolitical spread of culture along with technology, but it didn't mean that mystery of the world necessarily changed. For instance, it wasn't until a generation post WWII that the "dark corners of the map" were filled in by those advances. Think about the Indiana Jones and adventure serial (later, The Mummy with Brendan Frasier) idea of someone in the 20s-40s could be out there finding some lost artifact, city, or tribe. I mean, the literal cargo cults were a thing in the oceanic region given lesser contacted tribes seeing all these WWII era planes mass parachuting in "cargo" - easy shit to eat without hunting it or digging up a yam after a season or some shit, medicine and more - and so they started dressing in green and marching, building a runway strip out of coconuts and shit believing that "John Frum" would come with "cargo"! So it kinda went both ways.

However there were tons of other forms of mystique to the world. In the late 18th and early 19th century this was the Occultism era - pretty much everything a WeatherFactory game could be set in . People were learning about science and technology, and figured that learning about secret knowledge of ascended masters written about on some cave wall in tibet and only translated by a monk who came down from the top of a mountain every 5 years would give them enlightenment and power. Later on, counterculture would look to many of these principles but it was no more mustachioed men in a lodge but the belief that the dawning of the Age of Aquarius would mean a triumphant change. However, we also went forward and looked to the skies and technology as far as dreaming of a big world - all of the futurism and of course the space race and whatnot was another perspective. The more ambitious and positive side of things was the likes of Star Trek. Hell, even the early days and vision for the Internet 'felt" bigger...
>>

>>741935378
I don't know how making it without the modern day stuff and the mainline story is going to work. I wish they would have overhauled that instead to give more context (ie like have the Juno finale actually playable instead of in some goddamn comic book somewhere) instead of cutting it all out. The historical tale is directly connected to Blackbeard /Standish etc. Sage stuff and the Observatory, blood samples etc. which comes out in the modern storyline. It would be better for them to do do the Black Cross stuff instead (and maybe they will, or at least prep it for anotther game. There was an update for Shadows advertised that the finale story update there is Black Cross stuff , but the fact that Claws of Awaji is not important apparently or that there's no fucking follow up Japanese mythology expansion is fucking infuriating. ALl they had to do to apologize is give us a heavily Isu infused Yamanuchi Taka to be the protag of the mythology expansion. Fuck) .

For what its worth uh.. he might not be dead / his story isn't over. The whole storyline of what happened with Desmond actually works out pretty well (ie what happened in the Great Temple to avert the 2012 catastrophe at the end of 3, unleashed Juno - which leads up to stuff we see in original 4's Black Flag, and also has another impact that doesn't show up until the Layla Trilogy (Origins, Odyssey, Valhalla)

>all of the futurism and of course the space race and whatnot was another perspective. The more ambitious and positive side of things was the likes of Star Trek.
Yeah you're right, I completely forgot about those factors. I suppose, then, the only avenues by which the average modern man would ever really care about mystique have to be foisted onto him rather than naturally curated. Kind of a shame, really, you just had Artemis II this year complete a mission that'd have flourished with folklore in any other era; now it just comes across like a quaint little occurrence from a public standpoint

its a good game, has "improved" graphics compared to the original, slightly different and less janky combat, better movement and new content, although you need to buy the dlc for most of the new content. It's also updated pretty frequently.

It's not a Bethesda game bro. They just licensed Sea Dogs 2 and renamed it and added a Black Pearl ship. The series still exists and gets new entries with the newest one being released in 2025.
