There's no hope for Tales, and it's in large part thanks to the fans. When people cheered for the dumbing down of the game and combat between Xillia 1 and Xillia 2, that was the final sign for any involved to jump ship. And God knows that games have only gotten WORSE since X2.

I'm a big stickler to release date being king so I say start with Phantasia, but for tales I fudge it a little by playing the remakes of both Phantasia (PS1, though the PSP remake recently got translated) and Destiny (DC, as I mentioned previously). There's no REAL wrong place to start though, except for like Xillia 2 and Symphonia 2, the former you should play the first game first, and the latter you shouldn't play at all. just look for whatever interests you the most and try it out, if you like it you'll likely try out others.
