Narratively speaking, is this worth awhile?

No. DS2's themes and characters are weak and the plot doesn't advance anything. DS1 was tolerable but irritating, DS2 is just pretentious and clearly more concerned with putting the overpaid actors on display in pointless, not charming, not particularly stimulating scenes than with having a plot that actually accomplishes anything. Lifetime MGS fan by the way and I'm not categorically opposed to Death Stranding, but I think it's nowhere near as good as MGS.

If you have autism and can't interface with emotions or other human like qualities like this anon >>741936447 the answer is no. You even see this anon apply an utility frame to fiction "not advancing anything"; the equivalent would be saying that a painting is not advancing the medium because it only uses paint instead of something new.

DS1 was barely worth playing for its story and DS2 even less so, the cool part is the setting and world

Yes, it’s a more refined DS1, also once I’m done with DS2 I’ll start DS1 directors cut, I already played the plain version of the game.

OP asked about narrative i.e. the plot of the games. I don't think the plot was well executed. A plot should have character arcs. Sam spray painting his hair isn't a character arc. If DS2 erases the plot of the first game by having effectively nothing changes after the extended bloated melodrama in the first game, and then nothing changes by the end of the second game either, it's completely fair to say that a weakness of the narrative is its failure to advance any kind of significant story or accomplish anything.

Narratively it is better because there are more interesting things going on, like Tomorrow and her story, APAS 4000, Fragile's arc, Neil Vana and Lucy. And it felt like it had more close than the first game. My issue was that the character interactions throughout the game were kinda weird and boring like the random encounters between Sam and others on the ship. Or how whenever something important happens, once that ends you're back on the ship and "welp that happened, gotta get back to my deliveries now" and repeate that a bunch of times. But the game is a lot better than 1 overall because of the gameplay, the world, the new toys and the exploration. Building the roads, monorails and connecting preppers was still the best part for me

It's Kojimbo and his nonsense again, so if you liked Death Stranding 1 you will like this one as well.
I hate the puppet though, he never shuts up. At least I can mod that.

Absolutely play the original game first for a number of reasons. If you like Kojima craziness you'll love it in terms of the narrative and everything he puts into it. If you want to buy the sequel because you enjoy the original game so far, that's a good idea in terms of the Summer Sale. However, finish it first- you don't want to spoil stuff and like all Kojima there's niche stuff you'll miss if you try to enjoy it like a speedreading zoomer or someone who only watches videos.

I'm not autistic, I haven't consoomed any Death Stranding content, and my opinions are entirely my own, derived from having played games my whole life and actually read a substantial number of great books in the English canon. I'm not even an outright hater of these games. I played Metal Gear Solid before I was 10 and that entire series as they came out. I know what narrative in games is and I like Kojima's style generally. But I don't think story is a strongsuit of either Death Stranding game, and I think DS2 is markedly worse than DS1 in that regard. The story is almost entirely comprised of asspulls and there is practically no characterization for any of the characters.

I think it had significantly less tension, mystery and gravitas than DS1. And the gameplay is less interesting due to overabundance of tools, weapons and mobility options completely trivializing all missions.

>Play on the highest difficulty
>Game is still piss easy
>Bosses turn into bullet sponges
I hate this.
