What does /v/ think of GTA 3?

Really good, but shame it's unfinished. 3rd island, being just a glorified last mission setpiece, is really disappointing, especially when on the beta map you can see that it was practically cut in half.
>>
>>741940316
Was it rushed or was it cancelled for another reason?
>>
>>741940016
Best protagonist and best mission design allowing you to complete them with alternative non expected by developers means.
>>
I like it a lot, but the aggressive gangs make the late game extremely unpleasant. Also, the third island is straight up unfinished.

Hot take.
I like the original release of the Definitive Edition. Sure, it looks like shit but the gameplay is 100% intact with the bonus of having SA cam natively.

In later updates they ruined the gameplay. Claude can run and gun and they patched the crane glitch. This does not feel like GTA3 anymore.
>>
Fun game, the first ps2 game i really remember playing, but it completely changed the series and i miss 2

My personal favorite of the series.
>>
>>741940016
the cars being extremely fragile is incredibly annoying
>>
>>741940547
It was just rushed. >>741940316's image is the earliest concept map we have of Liberty City and you can see that Shoreside barely has any terrain detail and the roads are placed haphazardly.
The game could've been a 10/10 with a few more months in the oven, but they had to make the holiday 2001 deadline.
>>
>>741944857
Driving like shit and wrecking your car actually having a penalty is a good thing.
>>
THE PLANETARIUM IS T H R O B B I N G
>>
>>741940016
Fun, I 100%ed it earlier this month and had a good time, my only issues were the gunplay sucking compared to later entries and a couple of the missions being stupid (with Big N Veiny you either spend an hour pushing the van to the docks or pray that the traffic doesn't fuck you over)
>>
>>741940016
Spent a lot of time trying to get those special vehicles from videos and guides you'd see on GTAForums and such. Glitching into the garage and getting that first limo was fun
>>
>>741945023
>Driving like shit
I went one millimeter into mafia territory post-first island and my car exploded
>>
>>741945172
You get a bullet-proof car during the game.
>>
>>741944857
>>741945172
Car handling is the best in GTA 3, the NPCs aren't preprogrammed to slam into you for just existing on the road either, if you can drive fast and avoid gunfire you'll be good.
>>
>>741945339
They don't crash into you, but traffic is programmed to merge in front of you.

Never played 3 but I did enjoy LCS on the PSP
Though recently I tried playing that again on an emulator and boy was it clunky and shitty

Did you emulate the PSP version or the PS2 version?
If you do ever try GTA3, play the PC version.

It's aged horribly.
>>

Very fun. I had memorized the entire map and had a blast.
>>
>>741940016
Only cohesive GTA, every new one since then became a mess of clashing themes that make no sense together.

Great design

GTA3 DE looks like shit. I have an old pirate copy on my PC with a few mods to improve gameplay on par with San Andreas and that's it
>>
>>741952196
Also I like the beta cop cars rather than the final black ones
>>
>>741951901
Too tough for ya?
>>
The best story in any GTA. Amusing bosses, good twist, and nailed the landing. The Portland section is the best and should’ve been longer but it captured your imagination.

Shoreside Vale sucks. All 3rd islands in GTA are very underutilized.
>>
>>741940016
It's good but GTA 4 is better

Not my favorite GTA, but it still has the best system for collectibles in the franchise. Every 10 hidden packages you collect, you unlock a new weapon spawn in your safehouse. This means that even if you only find 90 out of 100, it's still worth exploring the map looking for them. I don't know how they got it right the first time, and then fucked it up in every game after VC
>>
>>741952667
I don't like how they got rid of police bribes. Those were insanely handy.
>>
>>741940016
groundbreaking on release, but honestly it's aged like milk
that's not me calling it a bad game from a design standpoint, but much like other trendsetters, they are essentially the prototype for future games to iterate and improve on, and they had no other games to really draw influence on.

even Vice City has aged significantly better than 3, just because of the lessons they learned from making 3

as much as I respect 3, I don't think I could go back and replay it with the same enjoyment I had in 2001
The chat radio stations however are still fucking amazing and funny
>>
>>741940316
I find it funny that I feel the same way about the next mainline game set in Liberty City

4's 3rd island just feels barren
>>
>>741940016
Hard to say. Functionality was limited at the time there wasn't much to do or see outside of missions. But atmosphere was great. Npcs had memorable quips that I think hold up today
>>
>>741952667
Vice City’s is not great. The unlocks are worse and then gate the perk behind 100% and you’ve already done everything at that point making it useless. Another mark of how rushed it was.

San Andreas had good rewards
>>
>>741952942
I’d love to watch a stream of zoomers trying to play GTA 3 on PS2 but they made it considerably easier with the Definitive Edition. You can actually aim amongst other significant improvements over the original despite the downgraded graphics and atmosphere
>>
>>741953305
VC being a downgrade makes a lot more sense when you realize that it was shat out in 9 months and was meant to be an expansion pak for 3, but was released as a full retail game instead
>>
>>741940016
So fucking sick.
>>
>>741943697
Currently doing a self-imposed RetroAchievements run, it's pretty much the normal Achievements except there are a lot of gimmick ones like do a stunt jump with a Dodo, or some which are straight up cruel like having to do all 12 levels of Paramedic in all 3 islands.
I think some of those achievements like the "get X weapon in less than 2 minutes" should be in a Bonus category. And also have a "Claude Prisoner" Starter save bonus set/achievement where the goal is to get max% while in the prisoner outfit and still in the first mission.
>>741953664
Vice City is the Toy Story 2 of GTA
>>
>>741953664
I meant the unlocks were not great. Huge downgrade from IIIs which as the guy I replied to said were perfect. I’m familiar with the dev cycle. Rockstar were all operating at the peaks of their powers because despite its flaws, they just absolutely nailed most of the game despite the limited development time
>>
I replayed it (or rather, finished it for the first time) 6 years ago, and it was solid. I missed out on the other islands as a kid as I got stuck on the boat/sniper mission. Can't really say that I did more than playing the missions, doe. The atmosphere is still great, I can see why zoomies are obsessing about the mood it gives off.
>>
>>741940016
fun but really was just laying the groundwork for Vice City
>>
>>741940016
Great but immediately overshadowed by Vice City in every way.
>>
I'm playing it on a ps3 on a giant nearly 40inch 4:3 crt and while it looks and sounds beautiful it has some pretty bad framerate issues especially when cars are smoking. Did the game always have frame issues or does the ps3 classic port run like trash
>>
I haven't played since I was a kid, I thought this was the whole map
>>
>>741954835
it shouldn't ever really dip below 20 FPS

Was GTA3 the one with the remote drone mission on that construction site? God that shit filtered me so hard, even now that's the first thing that comes to my mind oh and murdering the hookers after I fucked them so I get the money back.

Fucking hell can't remember GTA3 then. Did 3 still have these kill missions like 2 had?
>>
>>741955667
GTA 3 had rampages if that's what you're talking about. Like 'kill [x number] of [gang] before time runs out'
>>
>>741955776
Yea probably those, can't really remember 3 anymore.
>>
>>741954835
IIRC even on PS2 it does struggle sometimes but not as bad as on non-BC PS3, LCS suffers from this the worst because it was horribly optimized when it released on PS2.
>>
One of the reasons I was sad Siege of Dragonspear flopped was thaf I hoped it would start a new industry trend of old games getting new expansions. I would love for 3, VC, or SA to get expansion backs that add new companion cities and stories.
>>
>>741945119
>special vehicles
Fucking BASED I also used to do that with vice city as well
Did you know in vice city, the very first car you see is unique? It has a unique pure white paint job that you can't find on any other car, but if you lose it it's gone for good
>>
>>741956162
Sorry for bringing RetroAchievements autism again but they should add a Rare Car collector subset for the GTA Games, GTA 3 already has missable ones for getting a Cheetah before leaving Portland.

I think it is what made GTA good at its purest low level form. But it doesn’t have the surface level stuff that people remember. The story is nothing, the side content is nonexistent, and it’s missing pretty basic mechanics like a map screen, customization, jumping out speeding car or motorcycles. However the atmosphere of the game is pitch perfect, the way gangs and cops are so hyper aggressive leads to absurd chaos, and the missions are genuinely the most difficult but free form of the franchise since.

From a minute to minute gameplay standpoint, GTA3 might be the best
>>
>>741956162
>that mission in VC where you and lance protect diaz from the haitians
>if you finish and go around the block you can find and take diaz's empty car
>it's immune to bullets, explosions and crash damage
Kino...

>>741944984
Holiday releases have ruined so many games
>>
>>741956592
Claude and Tommy are the best GTA protagonists from a pure GTA experience perspective because at their core they are real deal criminals instead of a metaphor of how the criminal life sucks or a commentary on muh capitalism.

I am very fond of it without being blind to it's flaws
