Would you say Ryu has a generic design?

He has a stereotypical design
Stereotypes are good btw
World Warrior character designs are likeable because they are based on stereotypes

A few things to keep in mind:

1. He wasn't horribly generic when he was made.

2. While a generic design is not necessarily a bad thing (see Kyo from KOF and all of his iterations), it does become an issue when you as a creator aren't capable of imparting other memorable qualities onto the character that go beyond visuals.

3. Not all characters benefit from having a legacy as one of gaming biggest timeless icons like Ryu. If you're gonna go out of your way to make a "simple"/stereotypical character as >>741941532 said, then see #2. Simplicity is also its own beauty, but it needs a way to stick with the beholder.
