With the first "official" multiclass server for a classic mmo coming up that's sheer power fantasy and doesn't really resemble the classic game at all, how soon can we expect other games to follow suit?

Everquest didn't have strict dps/heal/tank mechanics in the sense of the way WoW does
You just took what you could
I can't see any game that relies on the trinity of tank/healer/dps in a group with specific numbers etc is going to be fine with multiclassing

There are WoW servers that are private and based around the fantasy of being able to build around more than one class, though. Something similar happened with EQ so they basically did what they could to shut that down and made an "official" version of it.
