At its heights, yes. 3, 4, and Strange Journey surpass Persona in basically every regard except OST (but 4's OST slaps) . Narratively, Digital Devil Saga and Devil Survivor are also pretty interesting. Persona 2 duology is worthy of standing alongside the best of SMT narratively, and 3 FES's main story is the right balance of fair yet still challenging.I think Persona has ruined mainline SMT though because Atlus thinks it can't put a substantial plot in SMT games after the mixed reaction to 4Apoc and #FE. They seem to think a plot-focused SMT game might confuse the consumerbase now that Persona is casual.I wish Soul Hackers 2 were released on Switch. In terms of themes, both have equal potential to be interesting, with Persona delving into Jungian psychology and SMT focusing more on mythology/the occult and apocalyptic scenarios. The turn based gameplay is about equal, I prefer press turn to the one more system, but they're very similar. Persona's calendar system and social sim elements make it much more story driven than SMT, and it generally has better writing, but SMT can be more interesting, especially the older titles.

i def prefer smt to persona. i do think smt 4 is alot better than 5 though, might be biased cause it was my first atlas game but its very innovative and different. the whole setting in 4 is very creative, while 5 is fun but not as unique imo. I was 30+ when i tried persona 4/5 and while the music is amazing, its really hard for me not to cringe at teenage issues and trying to immerse myself in asian high school life. had to quit 4+5 at like 10h in cause it felt like a vn for ... teens obviously. might give the games another try, but smt definitely feels like the "adult" persona.
