The normal raytracing is basically just reflections and extra global illumination if I remember right. You get extra depth on smaller objects so things don't float on tables, but it's a lot of more minute details for such a big performance hit. Path tracing is the big touted bullshit, and that has its own problems since some indoor areas have no lights hand-placed, literally requiring a flashlight mod to not be blind as a bat.

Consumer cards aren't actually capable of raytracing at level equivalent native resolution, so engines use a lower sample rate and then clean it up with denoising algorithms. That's what RT reflections looks blurry or pixelated a lot of the time like in pic related. Honestly the tech just isn't ready yet.

Raytracing heavily depends on the game and implementation. Witcher 3 with raytracing makes the non raytraced version look unfinished in comparison, but it's not the case in every situation.

I don't recall how it all works anymore but essentially you have unreal engines global illumination Lumen and then tacked ontop there is a ton of screenspace raycasting effects that do reflections and a whole bunch of other shit the lighting is basically completely unnaffected. It looks worse than a pre-baked light map with some cubemaps slapped on it and eats 1000x the performance. RT is the most insane marketing gimmick ever to the point they can now no longer run games at native resolution and need to artifact the hell out of it with upscalers to support all the shitty effects

More looking for RT vs PT though. I've seen comparison videos, but it seems to be hit or miss. I do know that screen space reflections in Cyberpunk are particularly terrible when you look at any water. I actually did try RT for just the reflections but couldn't quite hit the FPS I wanted on my 2070S.

The difference is so minute sometimes that you don't even care. Your mind is playing tricks on you, it sees those toggles at "medium" and thinks, oh I need to play it on ultra, I am going to crank everything up and toggle everything on, maybe then the game will "fun"... It is not the graphics, its the optimization and the game (which is actually not fun). Night City is beautiful to look at, but it is so devoid of life. It is empty. It is wide like an ocean, but deep as a puddle. Guys do me a favor and play this game without RT, you will enjoy it even more. You won't even notice a difference after 30 minutes.

I played the game a lot with no ray tracing and ray tracing. Both look quite similar.
Path tracing is a lot more noticeably different, especially in areas where things like lighting didn't receive a ton of attention. The lighting just looks naturally good almost everywhere.
Ironically though, it makes the player notice those less refined areas more easily. Normally the player sees sparsely detailed alleyway and thinks it's just a pointless background area. With path tracing, the player can subconsciously start looking at the level of detail in that alleyway and wonder why it looks so unfinished and basic.

You can get a 4k 160hz IPS for about 350-400 bucks nowadays. It's more accesible now than 1440p 144hz monitors were 5 years ago. You don't need a rich setup to run 4k. I run it with my 4070 ti super without issues. Sure I upscale quite often but since it looks better than 1440p I don't mind.

Cyberpunk looks great without raytracing. They did a good job on global illumination and lighting bakes. RT isn't much of an improvement for the FPS cost mainly because the base work is so good. Path tracing is significantly better than both though.

ray-tracing is bad because NVIDIA and AMD do it the wrong way.

the number one performance consideration is the spatial partitioning scheme used for ray tracing, not the raw number of rays you can shoot. before ray-tracing became a meme, every professional developer spent most of his time thinking about spatial partitioning

in graphics cards with ray-tracing they force you to use their own, opaque and undocumented spatial partitioning sheme.

basically, they try a "one-size-fits-all" strategy, to accommodate for every type of game scene, but in practice it turns out it's slow as fuck

Cyberpunk 2077 was not made with raytrace in mind, it's a post addition.
And i personally would only use RT for shadows and non-reflections, and try to make it as lightweight as possible.

It's "true raytracing".
For every pixel, you shoot several rays that bounce around, getting the colors of the materials and eventually landing on a light, then you do all the math.
The more rays you shoot per pixel, less noisy is the final result, but modern video cards can just use AI shit to convert a very noisy picture into a non-noisy picture, so less rays are shoot.

The regular "raytracing" only do some parts of the rendering with shooting rays like shadows or reflections, but everything else is done the traditional way.

Right so let's just break this down real quick.

Oblivion (2006)
Skyrim (2011)
Cyberpunk (2020)

In Oblivion there are about 950 NPCs you can speak to, and have a conversation with. In Skyrim, it's closer to 1,000. In Skyrim they expanded that dialogue further while exploring, where there are also conversations or I dialogue you can overhear between NPCs that add depth to the exploration around you.

In Cybpunk, there are only a few hundred NPCs you can talk to and have a conversation with. There are barely any buildings outside of the quest buildings to explore. There is no side areas to explore. There are no side dialogues to hear. And there are hundreds of less NPCs total you can speak with.

You can say Oblivion and Skyrim have lifeless NPCs but that's only a self-own of Cyberpunk if your goal is defending it, a game that dates Oblivion by 14 years, and Skyrim by 9.

What sucks is we won't see a game built with PT more in mind than as an extra bonus. RE9 is probably the closest we'll get, but the difference between RT & PT in that isn't that huge of a difference, mostly because the game is primarily static interiors and can bake a lot of shit.

Minus some cherry picked locations where the fallback lighting for Switch/Toasters looks like extra shit for some reason.

Dog shit at anything above 1440p. I have a 4k monitor and am forced to use DLSS Quality to barely maintain 60. Anything below that scaling makes it looks awful. Even a theoretical 6090 that doubled the performance of a 5090 would still struggle to give you 4k native at 60 fps and that kind of jump isn't happening.
