The only set of things that would bring me back is a serious, honest overhaul of combat and classes.
Jobs in XIV are basically shitty WoW rotations. A set of steps to be followed with no variation and no mastery to gain. You just do the steps otherwise you're playing the "job" wrong.
It is designed like WoW is, where we want to be always casting and always doing things so class job kits are made up of 99% damage dealing attacks and then the one skill you actually want from the class (raise, holmgang, etc).

It is so bad and so mediocre because it leads to solo jobs doing solo gameplay along other jobs. They are rotations, so they don't need other jobs to shine, or to be better. It doesn't matter what the party composition is and it never will.
But it should matter. Gear should be important. Class choice should be important. It's a fucking MMO what do you mean our progress gets robbed from us through the level sync? What am I even playing for if our characters don't actually get stronger? If we can't affect the story in any way. We don't have actual RPG features despite the hundreds of hours of solo garbage mmo questing.
Nah too much would need to change for me to come back to this trash garbage game.

You know I've been wondering that myself. I've been unsubbed over a year now and I've read some of the recent patch changes, and the relic and space exploration (crafting). None of that really seems appealing so I think my thirst for the game has completely dried up. I don't really like playing most classes anymore. And crafting is just braindead, you either have the stats or you don't to craft something. And honestly I don't even know what I want out of crafting. The fights just aren't interesting enough to be BIS day 1 and then farm for glam.

Nothing OP my dream of the mmo adventure cannot be fulfilled in the reality of mmos. I thought ffxiv could develop into a game with adventure in it despite its wow clone themepark nature, with the hype they pulled in ARR: anything was possible. Stringing myself along for so long, staying subbed for the people i met, next update next content adventure might happen with them like in my fantasy stories. The gameflow naturally sweeps players apart and it's a great effort to keep people inside of a party because every avenue of personal character building is ultimately solo progress, since everyone has their own goals then unity in purpose is always temporary for that one task.
All the items are character locked. To get people into content but in my experience what gets people into content is cash money. When every item can be sold then all rewards are good to get, suddenly any activity provides personal reward for any purpose.

I am a free trial player and I will upgrade if Evercold fixes the gameplay.
I knew that XIV's gameplay was just a weak version of WoW's but I did not realize how much weaker it really was. Healing is a 2 button DPS rotation where your healing guide is "never press a GCD heal unless it's your last resort". The jobs feel very homogenous. oGCDs are nearly universally button bloat that does not interact with your kit at all and exists just to pump up the APM chart to look less boring while not actually being fun.
I'm fine with XIV mostly just being a several hundred hour long VN with a zillion loading screens but I want to look forward to doing some real content when I get to the endgame but man I do not want to play these jobs as-is.
I will try the Evolved rotations and if those are fun I will upgrade and sub

Unless you are a hardcore Raider there is 0 reason to sub more than once per major patch.
Hell even once per 2 Major patches. In fact if you want to go to the extreme you can do all the post patch content using nothing but free log in campaigns and an occasional sub.

The game just does not have enough content outside of hardcore raiding to last more than 1 week per major patch.

Back in the day id literally just sub to do older Savage raids on Minimum item level and the Optional DRS or Eureka BA raid for fun other than doing the latest raid.
Now that im kinda tired of raiding i have lite reason to sub more than once per 3-6 months.
