>>742426450>Is that because they only focus on game-compatibility, and won't much touch or tinker with compatibility for non-gaming software run through desktop-mode?SteamOS is an atomic distribution, that is meant each update is a full image of the OS and all pre-installed software. You're not meant to modify the OS system files and pre-installed software or install software of your own at system level. This is highly inconvenient to someone who is a power user.Running a server on SteamOS is shit. Accessing SMB shares? Not great - I have to type in the IP of the SMB server rather than like on Windows or other Linux distros where I can just navigate to the server in network section of the file explorer. I can't fix it on SteamOS either because it doesn't support messing with system files, I'd need to install and enable Avahi and reconfigure systemd-resolved to make it work correctly I reckon. Of course you can still fuck around with SteamOS, but it's much much harder if you don't want to lose everything you've done when you update. This doesn't mean you can't do non-gaming shit on SteamOS. It depends entirely on what exactly you're trying to do whether you'll face massive inconvenience or not.

SteamOS doesn't have pre-installed wine either so you'll be limited by that factor as well - makes it harder. When I'm talking about software disappearing on updates, I'm talking about Linux software installed at system level which is theoretically possible on SteamOS if you disable read only. This isn't a factor at all for Windows software or any user mode software such as flatpak (from discover store), getting this particular software working correctly in the first place would be the difficult part.

>>742428017Yeah. Running non-game Windows software on SteamOS is more miserable than other distros such as Arch or CachyOS where you can just pacman -S wine. >>742428017You idiot, if we can customize it then there wouldn’t be a meme. Valve locks the SteamOS, this is why you can’t just edit files. The other guy is only talking in theory therms, no actual way to stop Valve’s design to reset.
>>742428487Example of what? I have 2 computers running Arch. The one I have done all the fucked up shit on has broken in minor ways before mostly as a consequence of my own actions such as forgetting to add a necessary partition (such as @home) to fstab, and the one which I haven't messed with has gone through many many updates without even a single issue.I mean you're a fedora nigger so you shouldn't be throwing stones at all, Fedora broke KDE and took way longer to fix it than Arch did.
>>742428342You should stop talking, “SteamOS” is a software not an operating system. You people paid Valve to install a free Linux version with a modified Steam build to look different from desktop. Going into system files and changing things up...I don't understand any of that, so I wouldn't try it without some real good reason. I understand that hardcore Linux users do this, and they gain a lot - whether it's convenience, efficiency or whatever - from it, and I won't say that's "stupid", because it's actually awesome that they can do that, I just have no need or reason to
