Large maps just make the game a bit unbalanced and more difficult because when you arrive on one you have further to walk, but you can send expeditions to any other tile on the map to get resources from there.

The gravship from the newest DLC is basically designed around a nomadic playstyle where you just yeet your base somewhere else when shit gets too fucked, even without it though you can use caravans to move from place to place, although you're limited on how much you can carry, although you can use animals to haul stuff long distance if you have them tamed.

I hate that the game kind of locks you down to 3 colonists. You just cannot grow that much but now that I think about it your only real shot is growing through prisoners. Btw the game knows this and the more colonists you have the higher the chance is for the enemy raider to die instead of get knocked down, and I think you can turn that off in the options somewhere.

You can resettle, you can temporary settle, you can send trade caravans. With official DLC, you can even settle on an asteroid or in space. I fucking love rimworld honestly. It is my favorite game of all time. I want to play it again but I don't think I'm ready again yet.

vanilla wealth calculation is fucking retarded. a faction should see heavily armed pawns and turrets on the surface, then interpolate your potential wealth from that, even if you have nothing in your storage. likewise if you have a mud house on the surface with people in rags, they should not assume you have a $500000000 stashed away inside, unless they have had intel or recon that would confirm it. and most importantly, if they do attack you and get completely and utterly decimated, maybe they should not attack back like retarded children and try to appease you with diplomacy, or if they have the manpower then actually send many many more people instead. It should not be "oh look the player has $20000 wealth, time to send 5 people again that instantly get blasted"

On my Adam and Eve style colonies (start with 2 colonists, inbred gene disabled, can only gain more colonists through pregnancy and birth, no growth vats) even when I turn off join events and the like I can feel Randy seething trying to give me more people.
