If a part is really complicated or tricky I'll go practice that in a save state. It's like learning a level in any other hard video game ever.>>742436594If you run the stage over and over you will see the gaps, eventually. If you isolate where you get hit typically in a save state you'll learn even faster. There are two major types of memorization, explicit and implicit. Explicit is go here, do that, implicit is intuitive, like learning to ride a bike. For explicit situations (routing) you chunk it like memorizing a phone number. (A phone number is broken up into chunks, like 123-555-5555 instead of 1235555555, which is much easier to learn and recall rapidly) For intuitive situations (dodging) you just practice that pattern a lot, and over time it will become more consistent. Use the video index on shmup wiki, and look at how others approach stages. The highest scoring replay is rarely the best answer for survival, and situations have many different answers, so look around.
