Do you regret not getting a Steam Deck when they were $300?
>>
>>742481768
I got one for that price and i regret it. It‘s just an indie machine for the most part and i could have played those on switch anyway. The most use i got out of it was playing dead space 2 which was nice
>>
Bought one at launch.
A few months later, it got to the point where I was spending more time trying to get it to work properly without throwing a hissy fit than I was actually play games.
The fact it drained its own battery overnight even when charged and turned OFF didn't help matters either
>>
>>742481768
I have one, I've used it so much its permanently stained with my sweat and grease. I upgraded to an Ally X last year
>>

Not really, the days where i would want one (long train rides) were are long gone before that thing came out
i might have grabbed it for my brother but he wasn't too into playing games outside

i got one, then sold it after 2 months. realized none of the games i played on it were demanding enough to warrant it over just using my laptop which i already carry around when traveling.

Definitely feel happy I got one last Christmas. Who the hell knows when things will return to even "normal" covid era pricing?

No because Valve doesn't sell them in my region, got pic related instead. I don't regret getting either it or the Switch 2, but honestly most of the handheld gaming I do is on my S23 Ultra with those clip-on controllers

mixed feelings about mine. Its great for casual minecraft on the server... it can run a few other titles but I find myself only playing star citizen recently so like it just doesn't get much use.

I got it for 300 and would be willing to sell it for the same price in EU.

If you don't use it for a while the battery does deplete - & requires quite a long charge before it even turns on. Quite unusual but I trust Valve hardware so there might be a reason for it.

>>
>>742481768

>>
>>742481768
got it a couple of years ago, I love it so much. It's like the psp 2 I always wanted as a kid. I even have it so whenever you turn it on it boots up the psps intro, lol. There's also a cool psps theme you can install.
I was actually planning on waiting for steam deck 2 but i figured even if it gets announced soon, i'll still get the most out of this just like my psp, and I used that thing way past it's glory days, jailbreaking it gave me so much freedom with it. With Steam Deck I didn't even have to do that, I could just play anything right out of the box, not just my steam games, so win/win. I don't even play games on my pc anymore. it's mostly used to hold more games on it whenever i need to move them.
I''m glad I got it now with the prices going up for everything. Made the right call. Though the market is full of alternatives now so I don't think steam deck being more expesnive will be that big of an impact for people if they just want A handheld pc
I'm sure there's plenty of great options. I like to think steam deck paved the way for gaming pc handhels like it didn't just have to be nintendo, and one that doesn't have a locked ecosystem. It's great for competition.

I have a Deck but it's been collecting dust lately. Though I attribute that more to me being busy with my Switch 2 and not finding the drive to play on my Steam Deck. It just feels better on my Switch 2. I've been curious on modding games, but don't know how to mod them. I figure Skyrim is a good starting point.

It does. I should get one for it.

I've had the 512GB OLED model for just over a year now, and it's not an exaggeration to say that it is the only thing keeping me into gaming at this point. Kind of bums me out that the price increase makes it harder to recommend the Deck to people.

>>742492162
Keep an eye on sales and (outside of emulation) use your Deck for anything that isn't a modern 1st / 2nd party Nintendo game. The only exceptions would be multiplayer games (with *might* work better on Switch 2) and modern 3rd party games that are better optimized for Switch 2 (you'll have to do your own research there).

Good example of something you should buy if you don't have it already is The Binding of Isaac (including all DLC). It's going to retail for $70 on Switch 2, but the exact same game is on sale for ~$5 on Steam right now.
>>

how long until babies aren't a pile of goo that eats, sleeps and shits all day?
>>
>>742492962
It only gets harder as the baby gets older. I have 3, ranging from 1 to 5, and I usually don't get a chance to game until they're all in bed.
>>
>>742481948
>It‘s just an indie machine
It's an everything machine, except for certain games with anti-cheat. People who say things like that can be locked 60fps 4k puritans, they cannot be people who say they could just game on the switch instead.
>>
>>742492745
How do I remove the mod? I click unsubscribe and the problem still exists.
>>742492898
I've built up enough of a backlog so I'm good there, with most of them being single player games. Including Binding.
>>742492962
>how long until babies aren't a pile of goo that eats, sleeps and shits all day?
Around 3, though you should just ask for your Deck back. Or at the very least, give him a deadline.
>>
I got my OLED one for $500 so I'm not complaining
>>
>>742493324
That should be enough, you can reverify the files or reinstall the game completely. If neither of those work, it might not be the mod and could be your proton version

>t. Megaquarium player where most of the fun comes from mods

This. And as obvious as it is, remember to keep your OS up to date with the stable branch. I was having issues earlier this year, and I think most of them were caused by outdated software.

been playing the new version of kiwami 2, you can actually hit 60 stable ish with frame gen now.
>>
>>742494128
It just depends on the games. Some games are way easier to mod on deck than others. You're going to want to figure out your directories, since the deck has a weird ass file system that makes finding installs a pain in the ass sometimes
>>
>>742494391
Yeah, alot of games play way better now. Lies of P is a stable 60 98% of the time now (outside of the hotel checkpoint with all the particle effects). I haven't beat Romeo yet, so who knows how the rest of the game runs, but the game was damn near unplayable in 2024

Got one a launch. It was great value when it came out, and with decent specs too. One of the best pieces of hardware I ever bought.

Nowadays the minipc market is more saturated with chinkhelds, plus the new OLED models don't really have much to offer in terms of power, whilst costing way more even before the RAM nonsense.

Same. My desktop monitor is HDR so every time I want to stream a game I have to go over and turn off HDR and then stream my game and even then I'm capped at 60hz and wifi5 only. It's crazy that Valve is putting out dogshit hardware and hasn't focused at all on making the Steam Link functionality half as good as some of the open source projects.

Portable systems are good if you don't want to be anchored to your "battlestation" for 16 hours a day. They also have a very prohibited function of being able to be plugged in to your living room, which obviously no one here does because it deprives you of your "battlestation".

I got two Steamdecks at launch and they still get used everyday. One for me and one for my wife. Though mine tends to stay in the bedroom hooked up to my bedroom 65" OLED as an emby client for playing the 200TB-ish worth of movies/TV/anime/music/etc these days since I got the Switch 2 which is a lot smaller in my backpack for gaming at work (I have a private office so I game a lot but it is below ground in a datacenter so no wifi for obvious reasons).
I can't imagine paying 750 bucks for one today though, even with the OLED display. That's retarded. It was pretty low performance when it came out, let alone today. Still serviceable for most games.

>thunderbolt is and always will be jenky as hell
>wifi is still fast enough to download lan shared fires and hook into a proper home mesh, bluetooth's codec has always been shit and if you use bluetooth devices, you're part of the problem
>critiquing a vetted and well supported verification process that has benefited other handhelds
>demand exceeded supply and now hardware is impossible to get for even corpos now
>muh availability
>truely technically illiterate despite the OS being a glorified console interface with a dummy proof default configuration
>support Asus and nvidia and micro$oft, silly goy, simply defeat half of the handheld form factor's purpose
Honorary white, at best. Supreme rage bait. This board has been dead for a decade.

I travel for work a shit-ton.
I'm at home very rarely.
Most of the shit I play is old, though, so I don't need a crazy strong portable.
>>
Glad I got my original model, then sold it for OLED which I still have now. Its a great option for many lower resource games and has basically made purchasing a gaming laptop unnecessary for short trips and the like. Have a dock for it too.
>>
>>742481768
Kind of?
I returned an oled because it had issues with its audio especially with headphones (apparently a know manufacturing defect) and was hesitant to try again.

Was too busy looking at the business lady bent over in the top right. Looked back at the laptop and saw it wide. WTF?

Yeah you gotta be careful with those screws, they’re just threaded into the plastic shell

Its 2026, get something to remove the screws and replace them. Information isn't scarce and aliexpress parts come fast as fuck. Not a deck, but I fuck enough shit up to recommend a chink parts seller

I haven't noticed this battery phenomenon at all, anon. Your deck might be broken
>>
Got the OLED version at launch. I'm not a Valve fanboy, it has its faults and I'd qualm at some things, but honestly it's grown on me over time and I'd say it's probably my current favourite gaming hardware. It's good for everything up to and including 8th gen and I've had some great experiences on it. At this point though there's no way I'd buy a replacement if it were to ever break at current prices. It's just insane. Fortunately I still have my desktop rig and a laptop ij reserve as well as a bunch of console hardware.
>>
>>742487451
The other guy is talking nonsense, that is a real thing. However there's also a setting you can change in the bios to protect the battery if you intend to go for some months without using it. However that kind of requires planning and not just impulsively not using it for whatever season
>>
>>742491970
thats why I prefer v1 on dreamcast, so there's no ultimate autismo
>>
>>742487451
I've been having battery issues too. I have it set at 80% but even when left on the dock, it ranges between the late 75s. After I unplug it, I have an hour or less before it dies.

gaming laptops are nice as long as you
>keep it plugged in
>keep it cool
oh so you know, the only thing you really want from a PORTABLE gaming device, tied to a fuckin power cord.
yeah no thanks

So why do you guys shill the Deck instead of the sub $200 chink handhelds that can play up to PS2 and Gamecube?
>>

Holy shit is this real?
>>

I like the Deck but I wish playing GOG games on it was less of a hassle
>>
>>742509598
I install from Lutris and they just werk. What hurdles are you having to jump?
>>
No. I'm glad people like them but I still do not understand the appeal of handhelds for people who aren't 12 year olds going on vacation with their family. If I'm home I'm playing games on my pc or sitting on my couch with my huge TV. If I'm in bed I'm going to sleep.

I got a ROG Ally for $300 (regular Z1, non-extreme), and for awhile I was happy playing simple games but then I put it away after playing through F:NV. It couldn't play modern games except indies. Then I rediscovered streaming with Apollo and it was finally good enough to use with the virtual displays, and now I use the Ally all the time. I see no purpose to upgrade anything except my desktop PC.

>>742510430
If you understand the difference between gaming on PC, and gaming on a TV, then you just apply that logic to other parts of your house. Gaming in the backyard, gaming by a window, gaming on the indoor exercise bike, etc

>>742510658
A gaming laptop still solves a use case, it's the middle ground between a handheld and a desktop. A handheld cannot provide 150w to a dGPU, while a laptop can and you can still put it in a backpack. A gaming laptop and a handheld together works great for streaming on the go and solves the biggest problem with gaming laptops, the horrendous noise. You put the laptop in another room and just stream from it.
>>
>>742508482
You don't really have to keep them cool. Airflow design has improved and is pretty standard across brands and products now. You do have to keep them plugged in, but I always use them at a desk or couch so no issue.
>>
>>742511187
>You put the laptop in another room and just stream from it.
That's a thing? Can I do that with a base Steam Deck?
>>
>>742511762
Apollo on the laptop, Moonlight on the Deck. I use this when I go back to my parents house. Though if you're in a hotel, you may need a travel router to connect your devices or if your laptop has direct hotspot that may work.
>>
>>742481768
No I regret getting one Day 1. I have barely used it.
>>
>>742512173
Does it improve the performance of the Deck or is it solely for streaming when not at home?
>>
>>742503479
got it from loverslab, just search Soul Calibur 4 nude mod, it's been forever but iirc you just have to drop the files where they belong in the sc4 folder and overwrite.
>>
>>742512828
The Deck does nothing but stream a video of the actual game running on the host machine (the gaming laptop). The Deck sends controller input through wi-fi to the laptop and the laptop sends the video stream back. So the deck is just playing a video, the deck's performance doesn't matter.

Why doesn't Yoda have his cock out?
>>
>>742513048
So the game's performance on the Deck ties in with a laptop's performance?
>>
>>742513146
Yes, the laptop's performance and wifi performance are the bottleneck. The client device (Deck, ROG Ally, phone) performance is irrelevant, it's just playing a video from the host device.
