In 2016 quick melee wasn't good for much other than staggering small enemies for a second either. You might hit zombies with it for glory kills but the regular shotgun and heavy cannon primary fires are basically "the weapons you use to set up glory kills" in eternal anyway

This is what I mean when I say 2016 becomes boring very quickly because the whole game is just combat vs a few demons in a tiny locked arena then you go to the next tiny locked arena fight a few demons, and the whole game is just this - except the combat itself is very dull and simple.
Eternal sadly had the same level design but at least the actual combat was good so it worked. Dark Ages had slighty worse combat than Eternal but it had actually open levels and allowed for a fuckton of demons onscreen at once.

Not every game needs to be like Eternal but I think it shouldn't be controversial to say that Doom 2016's combat even in isolation is a tad lacklustre. Some games with good combat allow the player to enter a 'fun zone' of sorts, like Titanfall 2 or Vermintide. A strong balance of challenge and spectacle that feels very fun to play. I don't think 2016 has much of a fun zone, at least I never found it. Eternal does, provided that you're willing to adapt to the playstyle Eternal asks of the player.

This has probably been my most disagreed with opinion ever on slash vee when 2016 was coming out, my rationale back then was that you can make almost any kind of action game on gzdoom but you can't make a horror game. Well I was proven wrong on the second opinion mere years later and you also can't make the kind of action game nudoom, eternal specifically, is on gzdoom
Now I would next love to see a horror-focused doom however in 2016 I admit I was wrong. Eternal is amazing and total chaos surely is better than any horror game d44m could've been

I enjoyed turning on Siege Mode railgun in 2016, or Mobile Turret chaingun. I don't care that it made the game too easy with Rich Get Richer, it was cool.

I don't mind that Eternal was heavyhanded with how it wanted me to play it. The combat was fun.

The parrying in TDA never bothered me, for the most part it was well executed. This game finally delivered on all the lorewank about the Doomslayer being an unstoppable force, you can actually do those things in the gameplay and that makes the whole experience good to me.

Revelations DLC is peak nuDoom.

It was fine in 2016, and while people are spoiled for mobility now, it's still fine in 2026. Feels like folks underestimate or forgot how chaotic the fights can get with all the enemy mobility and the high damage you take, standing still past the early levels is almost instant death.

I played DOOM as a kid but was never a fan. 2016 is the only one of the nu-DOOM games I enjoyed enough to finish. I don't have strong opinions about Eternal or TDA but I found them both boring enough to never finish them. I got pretty close to the end in Eternal but found TDA so mind numbingly easy that I dropped it right after the first dragon mission. So take that as you will. Or not. But those are my thoughts.

I'm not particularly attached to 2016 or Eternal, but TDA grinds my gears in a really specific way. Even on the higher difficulties, you have to go out of your way adjusting difficulty sliders to make the game feel like it's not holding your hand and treating you like a retard. I see people memeing on it for parryslop but it is genuinely kinda insulting how slow and obvious they make all the parryable projectiles/attacks. And your shield charge/other abilities just fucking annihilate enemies in giant fucking splash zones with insane damage for no effort. I'm admittedly not the biggest old school Doom fan so idk if the old games are super hard or not but TDA just feels like a baby game and I can't stand games like that
