At this point, the party still has no idea what the hell Sephiroth's trying to do or why Cloud is so insistent on stopping him. In the moment it lets the player get a quick recap of the overall plot since they've spent the last several hours doing character-based side stories that aren't really relevant to the main story, and it sets up the twist later that Cloud's just taking part in the Reunion without realizing it.
