What's the first thing an MMO should make you care about? Your character? Your gear? Your guild? Money? Territory? Your reputation? The world itself? Other players?

What should hook you before anything else, and why?

I feel like different MMOs answer this question completely differently, and it changes the entire game.

The vibes, followed by the story. Great vibes can excuse a just-okay story but even the best stories can be wrecked by bad vibes.
Then you should care about your place in the story. The place of others in that story. Then all the social aspects (trade pvp quest assistance banter).
A game has to be able to stand on its own to be a great mmo.

Its a weirdthing that personalamis arstyle imo evolved to worse when you compare mid 2010s like pic related to current.
I guess the current style is just so fast and efficient when you need to shit out tons of pictures and coms with variations but at the cost of most of modern work kinda just blending into a blur of pretty samey soft faces and lithe bodies.

"There are thousands of other people here, and you can find your place among them."

Everything else -- combat, progression, crafting, PvP, economies -- should reinforce that feeling rather than replace it.
>>
>>743262837
An MMORPG should be an RPG with other people around. This should seem obvious but every MMO fucks it up with content bloat that detracts from the RPG feeling, and if an MMO has been out for more than a few years it often feels like the game doesn't even have a director.
>levelling journey is skipped to get to the endgame raiding scene, which wants to be a co-op forevergame like Helldivers 2 rather than an RPG
>PvP is a 10000 hour minigame instead of not being present at all (preferable) or something that happens as part of the RPG journey like a bandit attack
>Main story bosses are a joke meanwhile the biggest threat in the game is some chucklefuck in a cave
>Devs balance builds so tightly that everyone feels like they have to min-max in order to get anywhere, instead of everything being viable
>Cool cosmetics come from either a cash shop or an arbitrary 100 hour rare drop grind
>finishing the achievements requires a week of finding a bunch of other people just to play some shit nobody has touched in years

The closest MMO I've found to not doing this shit is LOTRO but it's not perfect

Because it is neither thrilling nor rewarding, it's just an annoyance that gets 3rd worlders addicted because they thinking ganking lower level people makes them king shit. It is an inherently parasitic form of gameplay that has nothing to do with the proper feeling of an RPG which revolves around immersion, exploration, progress, and especially story. All you pvpfags should be kept to shit like counterstrike and fifa.

>ganking lower level people makes them king shit
Why does this point always come up as *the* point arguing against PvP? Ganking lowbies doesn't even happen that often, and levels aren't the optimal design for fair but compelling engagements.

How is winning a PvP battle not the most thrilling experience? People reward engagements with real people much more than AI.

Because I don't fucking care about the other person. They have nothing to do with the goals I've set or the questline I'm on. I'm here to be immersed in the RPG setting, not have to deal with some faggot getting in the way of me experiencing the actual game.
What you PvPfags don't understand is that not everything exists to serve your gay niche. And it is a niche, a VERY tiny fraction of MMO players do PvP.
If you want PvP why don't you go play Overwatch or something instead of shitting up MMOs?

Getting money from taxes.

Approximately nobody likes questing. WoW has traditionally lost like 90% of players to leveling.
>>
>>743274113
You're a faggot and the reason I started playing world of warcraft in vanilla was because I enjoyed the WORLD of warcraft. Playing the game, finding things out with other people in the same place at the same time was peak WoW as opposed to just dungeon queuing my way through the world to sleep my way through gathering materials for raid supplies.
>>
>>743262837
Being a game that feels good to play. Look at maplestory, one of the most predatory MMOs out there with the worst management possible, and people still waste money on the game even though it's barely worth it anymore. Good gamefeel, art, and music. Story is serviceable, it's an mmo so it has to keep going.
>>
>>743274113
Money exists to fund questing. Otherwise it's just a meaningless number going up.
WoW is a shit game. Questing is the main draw for the better MMOs like LOTRO, SWTOR, and Runescape.

You genuinely don't have a soul if stories aren't meaningful to you.
>>743274881
The better stories, like the Agent storyline, hold their own. I'd agree for the Jedi classes though.
>>
>>743274952
The people i met doing those quests. The content was always secondary to that and when i started logging in for content is also when i can honestly say Wow was dying.
>>
>>743274952
Quests are many hundreds of hours of content, so that typically keeps me going. If I reach post-game then I might enjoy doing stuff in the world like rep grinds or the fishing and birding system from LOTRO, or I'll just wait for the next expansion.
>>
>>743275000
I never said anything about stories not being meaningful.
>>
>>743275000
No I think they're all inferior. Quests are tied directly into the environments you're exploring, pacing is much better, and you never have to complete all quests in an area if you don't want to.
>>
>>743275018
>>743275212
What if you unlocked quests by PvPing? Or were invited to achievement-locked guilds?
>>
>>743262837
Complexity of mechanics, amount of content, being easy to learn and hard to master, scalability for future expansions and updates, low system requirements, high optimization, ingame support, high player and community agency, quality leaps in power and not just numerical.
The closest game to perfect MMO was EVE Online. WoW is a great game as a raiding/arena simulator - but as an MMORPG in the sense it's really poor.
>>
>>743272625
>Because I don't fucking care about the other person.
Then why do you want to play an MMORPG in the first place? MMORPGs should be about conflict and competition, even if it involves working together with someone.
This thing you described is just poor game design. There should not be a situation when a high skilled and prepared player can ambush a low level novice or someone who is not interested in pvp for zero reward. It's the equivalent of hunting deer with nuclear weapons: pointless, waste of time for both parties, zero reward. Pvp must be fair: when you go out fully equipped with a purpose to kill and meet someone else with the same intention.

This is not what RPGs are about. Not even remotely. The other players in an MMO are there to contribute to the lively atmosphere of the world.

>This is not what RPGs are about. Not even remotely. The other players in an MMO are there to contribute to the lively atmosphere of the world.
Not everyone shares this sentiment. Some players want to conquer and forge their own story instead of riding a railroad that is made out of simple pre-determined quests. Wouldn't it be interesing if these people who populate the virtual world would fight, go to war, thus shaping the political environment? It would be more lively and organic. It doesn't have to involve you personally.
>>
>>743277993
Not true. You have never played it. You sound like a triggered cultist.
>>
>>743276137
The PvP reward should always come straight out of the defeated players inventory. Anything else can be farmed.
>>
>>743279497
Those people don't want to play an MMORPG then. They want something closer to No Man's Sky or Conan Exiles.
>>
>>743280010
No, they just want something resembling actual MMOs like Ultima Online before themepark bullshit took over and turned everything into chat lobby with single player games by degrees

problem is, these will always turn into absolute tyrannies because it is too easy for anyone who doesn't want to 'fight' for a completely fictional Universe to drop the games entirely while pvp players eventually have nothing remaining. Either the entire sever is aligned to squash pvp, or it gets dominated by 'warlords'. every effort to systematize criminal justice in an MMO has been met with retarded shit that is exploited to impose it upon people who want nothing to do with it, to the point your options as a victim are simply to die. Fighting back apparently means you wanted it, after all. Fucking Karens in charge of justice.

tl;dr its too easy to escape responsibility for security by just leaving the game entirely. no system has been devised to support the average joe relative in-game murderers and thieves.
>>
>>743282625
Ok retard, the games with no focus at all on being an RPG are "real" MMORPGs. So what do you call RPGs with a massively multiplayer element then?
