Engage is a much more light-hearted and less serious story and the gameplay can be polarizing due to shit like bonded shield being a centralizing mechanic, 3 Houses characters are either love it or hate it and it has a story that still causes endless lore arguments and shit flinging a decade later which, if nothing else, is a mark of being memorable, the same way there's people screaming about Stormcloaks vs Imperials 15+ years later too. 3 Houses characters were largely written by Koei Tecmo and not IS and the difference between the two companies is quite apparent if you play engage and 3H back to back, if you prefer the Koei writing there's also 3 Hopes as a musou game with alternate timeline routes for the Houses cast with a new protagonist and Byleth as an ally or enemt

And any one of the Hort retainers can stay since they get a purpose for a chapter, but only one of them, you don't need both.

Could just as well be that Nemesis was a rampaging bandit rapetard, and thus Wilhelm wouldn't consider an alliance against such a person, for either moral or even pragmatic reasons. I think the writers did not even think it throught in more detail - who Wilhelm was, what he wanted, why he allied with who he did, etc. He's just some dude who founded the Empire and that's it.
