It's kind of wild what a huge battle trying to get the IP back was when original Alice is public domain.

Ah well, it's a shame we never got more even though the series was always pure style over substance.

Honestly glad he didn't get it back. Returns was a mid three hour game stretched into 6. The animated movie was crap. He didn't even have the rights for the third game when he started shilling for it. I'm convinced the first game was a fluke.
I will miss alice though

it was actually a functioning character hack and slash action game before the souls-like slop we had rolling through after that. its still miles better of a game than modern day gaming.

do you need more?
>>
i like Alice because its 3rd person Quake. We are not the same
>>
>>743278391
Might've been in his contract with EA that he couldn't make anything else similar like that. It also seemed like McGee wanted to do something big and wasn't interested in anything else which is why he just gave up game development when it was becoming obvious another Alice game was unlikely.
>>
>>743276453
What's funnier is that, according to American, EA forbade him and his "team" from using a game engine to actually make a game, which is why all he has to show for is a large document of what he wanted to make.
>>743278391
Considering that American's next game is going to be a spiritual sequel to Madness Returns, and he created an entire design bible for Asylum, he's just extremely emotionally attached to that version of Alice.
>>743280674

He's going to return with a doll horror action game that also serves as advertisement for his doll franchise.

> One of my greatest frustrations throughout the Alice: Asylum pre-production was the fact that we were forbidden by EA to fire up a game engine. We had tons of story, art, and other creative assets - but we were NOT ALLOWED to place any of that into a game environment.

i don't understand the practice of buying ips then never using them. Even killing the hype surrounding them so they'll never make a financially profitable come back.
>>
>>743283129
EA has other titles that make so much money which makes Alice pocket change to them. They used to do smaller titles more often but it's just not really worth it to them anymore.
>>
>>743283807
so why hold the ip, they should sell it.

>Alice: Otherlands is an animated sequel to Alice: Madness Returns. It is a series of two short films and artwork developed by Spicy Horse to help bring closure to the Alice series, which was envisioned as a trilogy by American McGee.
>>
>>743283807
EA had a line for a bit where they'd dump money into new IPs. They all flopped catastrophically.
>>
>>743283870
It's still just pocket change to them. Companies will hold on to stuff like that in case it ever does become more profitable in the future. It's just not worth it for them to do anything at all with it.

>>

thats the thing it never will because they are actively killing any attempt to make it popular again.
As it stands they could sell it to a film studio to make a movie or another game company and actually make money.
Seems more like an example of corporate incompetence
>>
>>743284081
A film studio would have to weigh alice in wonderland which is public domain or alice in wonderland madness returns which isn't.

I know which one id pick.
>>
>>743284279
the cool one with the huge cult following. Thats something new over another alice rehash.

>>
>>743284081
It's still not going to be as profitable as something like Madden or The Sims. It sucks as a fan but to EA it's like working an hour for $5 to do Alice stuff when their bigger titles would be $500 instead.

i actually think Alice 1 is better than Alice 2.
Alice 2 had nice graphics including art like the hair physics was very nice, a lot of it felt ahead of its time.
But it has this awkward anti-pedo theme thats just funnier the more i think about it.

The first one is so great because it's 3rd person Quake in that art style Id was famous for and has this really cool depiction of "chaos" and the demonic that as a 40k fan i really love, really captures the look of chaos

The institution of copyright exists to shit all over creators in favor of big publishers. Big publishers could not conglomerate to anywhere near their current extent if they did not have solid capital in the form of copyrights, and only at that kind of scale can they start exercising active control over the culture of the country, rather than just letting everyone effectively self-publish shit.
Animal Farm was actively being suppressed by communist government infiltrators during WW2 by leaning on publishers and if you want to get an idea of what kind of changes those publishers wanted for Orwell to be able to publish his book, just look at the Animal Farm remake lmao, which was basically one last fuck you to destroy his legacy and cultural impact.

>>
>>743285940
but its a legitimately bad business decision. Of you buy something and don't use it it is a waste of money.
Occum's razor the issue is that the right buyer hasn't come along offering enough money to buy Alice, and Mcgee can't afford it
We need to convince Musk to buy it for Mcgee
>>
>>743285992
>if you buy something and don't use it it is a waste of money
only if you dont have an infinite amount of money
>>
>>743285992
>but its a legitimately bad business decision
sure but businesses are run by executives, and executives are consistently arrogant, stupid, narcissists who fell into money and just want to pump and dump shit for even more money
they don't want a long term successful business, they want their egos fluffed and ROI is only part of the means to that end; they'll happily crash and burn shit so that they can pretend they were important and creative when late adopters are all vampires
>>
>>743285748
>Rules for thee, but not for me
Commie shit in their own countries doesn't have to pretend to safeguard freedom of speech. Copyright is a commie law for western countries that ostensibly have freedom of speech laws.
>>
>>743286897
copyright is not a commie law, its a law to protect peoples IP.
And in the future with ai and other tech advancements it will be the only way to secure your ip so you can make money.
The people against copyright are always seething commie dipshits and ip thieves that want to profit off others property.
The issue with Alice and Mcgee is he signed away his ownership of his IP. Which is a common thing that happened to a lot of artists because how are they to know their IP will become popular.
>>
>>743272689
The other day i was at a con and i saw an Alice cosplayer that wasnt wearing shoes, only knee high socks.
>>
>>743287095
Yeah wow, it's almost like the current iteration is geared almost entirely to publishers.
Copyright that doesn't preserve copyleft freedoms needs to be reduced to a 5-14 year duration or it just doesn't make sense.
We're no longer operating on a scale where an extensive 19th century licensing deal needs to be hammered with telegrams.
>>
every time i see someone anti-copyright im just picturing a chinese poster seething because he cant legally sell his knock off wares to westerners
>>
>>743287095
>Alice and Mcgee is he signed away his ownership of his IP
He never had the IP. He worked for EA at the time, therefore all his creations are automatically owned by EA.
Source : Mcgee himself.
>>
>>743289301
thats the point he went into a contract where he forfeited his ownership of his own work. this happened to LOTS of video game artists/creators
>>
>>743289301
when anon says ownership of his IP he means ownership of his own work his intellectual property literally.
Not the IP EA would own. When you get into contractual agreements with these publishers they make you sign away your ownership or stake in your work

>I'm convinced the first game was a fluke.
The first game is unplayable garbage, I bet you haven't actually gone back to it since you were a kid. Platforming is shit, the "action" is unbelievably rudimentary and laughable, and the entire game feels like playing one giant ice level. The only thing that was ever good about it was everything that was not the actual game, i.e. the music, setting, characters. Madness Returns was at least competent as a game.

And plays terribly. I realized the reason I didn't have much issue with it at the time was that I was primarily a PC gamer and didn't have a whole lot of reference for third-person 3D action. I still like it as an odd artifact, but complaining about Madness Returns being mid when the first game was like that is dishonest.

As for Madness Return, I really liked the story structure of the levels being based on what happened during the real-world interludes. It was a small detail that could have been left out entirely without any real difference to the game, but it made the whole thing feel a lot more connected, and I remember that specifically leaving an impression on me.

>>
>>743298332
>(a PC game trying to be a console game playing like a PC game.)
What does that mean? Are you saying the first game was trying to be a console game? Because American McGee worked on Alice right after Doom and Quake and I don't imagine there was much influence to be a console game there. Rogue Entertainment also had more experience on PC games although they did work on Quake for the N64 port. But I wouldn't say it was trying to be a console game just because it deviated from the standard Doom/Quake style a bit.
>>
>>743291335
This. I played it like 5-10 years after it's release and was shocked that so many people like it. It's not even just a "oh I have an opinion that this game is bad," it's that the game is objectively bad. It's extremely glitchy, the physics engine barely works and causes tons of death, the game design leads the player into mistakes, the boss fights are janky, and the game just plain wears out its welcome real fast. This is all on TOP of the fact that the game is just trying to rehash SH2 "I forgor" bullshit that was all the rage in the 2000s as a TWEEEEST. Literally the only thing it has going for it is a kinda hot mentally-ill schizo waifu.

>Like literally, he had like 50 stepfathers before his mother settled down with a transsexual woman
>Met his actual father once at the age of 13, only to discover that he's a hardcore alcoholic fuck up loser who beat the living shit out of him the same day
>One day at the age of 16, he came home from school only to find out that his mother sold the house to pay for two plane tickets and the fee for her girlfriend's gender-affirming surgery, leaving him on his own
>The only things left were his bed, his books, his clothes, and his Commodore 64 computer
>Packed up his computer, dropped out of high school, and took a variety of odd jobs, finally settling on a Volkswagen repair shop

His obsession with making video games specifically based on Alice's Wonderland makes so much sense
