They made a fuck ton of mistakes since leaving Activision, finally got the game in a pretty good spot by 2024 but then fucked it all up. Last year was total shit, it effectively sunset anything that wasn't in the stupid portal and that was about 90% of the game. They made a lot of retarded decisions, drove players away, and did nothing to get them back until they decided on EoS.

Bungie was actively trying to kill D2 for the past 6 years, and has been one of the most blatant anti-consumer companies in the industry. People were right never to recommend D2 to you. Every story beat and expansion made by Activision has been praised. So the people at bungie, who had nothing to do with creating the Destiny universe, hated working on it.
