Do you think it would make him seethe that every lazy indie game dev under the sun is stealing his worldbuilding and lore?
>>
Lovecraft actively encouraged others to write their own stuff in the Cthulhu mythos
He's not Tolkien in any sense
>>
>>743275086
he'd be more mad that Indians and brown people are everywhere I think

shut the fuck up
>>
>>743275813
This, especially since he recognized the good "white" indians as being different from the stinky brown indians whose deluge of low caste spawn ruined the country.
>>
>>743275086
i doubt it. the very concept of video games would probably cause him constant terror, leaving him no time to be mad.
>>

Yes but the most he’d do is call them a nigger in a seething handwritten letter

This. He literally had a mini-fanclub or what modern Japanese might recognize as a Circle where he'd swap letters full of ideas with other authors bouncing off his verse.

Almost none of the Lovecraftian games are actually decent representations of his works, tone, or themes. Everyone just knows a couple of names and a bunch of cliches that barely even appear in his work and think that's what "Lovecraftian" means. Particularly offensive since most of his works are easily digestible short stories.
>>
>>743275086
Bro would probably be in a fuck huge Discord or forum passing shit around. Dude did nothing but pen pal other writers who'd all make nods to similar occult books/dieties that didn't exist prior in order to make it more real. It's half the reason you see shit referenced with guys like Howard or Chambers.
His baseline was pretty much doing everything possible to encourage others to write while being lazy about doing his own stuff, so up until the busted out a heckin chud owning 1920's nigress scientist he'd probably be on board.
>>

Lovecraft himself also openly borrowed worldbuilding and lore from others, like Hastur which was not his invention and was originally featured in Robert Chambers's The King in Yellow which might have also influenced Lovecraft in coining Necronomicon. Lovecraft also borrowed plenty of cosmic horror vibes from books of William Hodgson, especially The Night Land and House in the Borderland, and Lovecraft himself was open about these influences in his lifetime.
>>
>>743275086
Why did no one make a game based on his cat yet?
>>
Lovecraft would probably be more pissed off by Stuart Gordon adapting his work into sleazy exploitation films in the 1980s.
>>
>>743284606
Cats are extensively featured as allies in Cyclopean: The Great Abyss.
>>
>>743275813
That's pretty normal.
>>743275834
He would probably find that funny as hell.
>>
>>743275086
I remember reading a newer edition of Rats in the Walls and the cat's name is changed to Black Tom. You think he'd get angry over that?
>>
>>743277385
He actually was not productive enough nor good with his money to properly support himself, and he lived his last years like a destitute poorfag so that he would not waste entirety of his dwindling inheritance which he depended on. Lovecraft eating pretty much only the cheapest and shittiest canned foods of the era for years might have contributed to the stomach cancer which ultimately killed him.
>>
>>743281405
It's actually been years now that I think about it, since I last read Lovecraft. But honestly how would you make a "faithful" game?
It's a lot of dread about not knowing what's going on. With an ineffectual finale of the main character achieving nothing of note in the grand scheme of things.
Yes there are of course outliers like the thing in the basement they dumped acid on. The spooky cave monkey dying to a lucky thrown rock, obviously The Call of Ctulhu sort of barely getting away with it etc.
The best I can remember playing is probably Anchorhead. But given that it's a text adventure in the same style. It's more like reading fan fiction than playing an actual game.
>>
>>743285007
>But honestly how would you make a "faithful" game?

A point and click adventure. Basically Broken Sword, but replace the Templar conspiracy with a Cthulhu cultist conspiracy.
>>
>>743285118
So Anchorhead with graphics
>>
>>743285007
Lovecraftian borrow is diminished by depiction of it, both graphical and audible. When something is described as being of "outworldly indescribable color" how do you depic it? The stuff you imagine in your head will always be better than what can be drawn up for a game
>>
>>743276027
1% Welsh
>>
>>743285212
Exactly. And even when the monster is a lot more mundane. It would be hard to get to that level of dread I think. Video games depict so many horrific things no one bats an eye at. You could probably have any of the weirder enemies from Souls games be the monster in a Lovecraft story. As long as the entire story hides it behind so much fear of it, and unclear details. But NEVER showed it.
>>
>>743275086
I wish they'd steal the underlying emotional effect and vibe of his work with different monsters and lore instead of making a shitty ersatz version without any punch to it that copies the lore accurately but blandly like it was fed through an AI.

Got o book last Christmas about the cats of famous people. Nothing on Lovecrafts cat. A very peculiar omission, I wonder why wasnt he included?
>>
>>743286113
Hodgson was definitely a way cooler guy. He lifted weights and bullied Harry Houdini for no reason other than he thought he was lame. He got bullied as a young sailor but he didnt curl up he learned how to fight and lifted weights then he would deliberately pulverize people on ships who fucked with him. Then he did what all true warriors do and died in a war by getting blown the fuck up.

Lovecraft thought he was one of the best which is funny because Hodgson would've absolutely bullied the shit out of Lovecraft if he ever met him.

>The other side wants to remind you he was racist (Good)
Can't we just talk about fish people and evil octopus god?
>>
>>743275086
I think he'd probably be happy that he became so renowned and influential, and probably be embarrassed at being remembered for racism
>>
>>743286249
100% true, either the hispanic women (those goddamn sluts), or asian women drive racist men too wild.
>>
>>743281405
Oh, yeah, shout out to Bethesda for creating a basic bitch tentacle moster (Deagonborn DLC) and basic bitch booney weirdos (Point Lookout DLC). It was also during the time when Lovecraft was becoming mainstream, everyone and their mother were like "ooh aah, tentacles and inbreeding scawwy."
>>
>>743286271
it's is way more interesting to dissect his psyche and its impacts on the stuff he wrote about
you see fish people and evil octopus god, I just see his thoughts on race-mixing and replacement theory
>>
>>743286279
he would not be embarrassed for being racist, he would still be racist and see that racists were right about the future of white countries and would probably be deeply annoyed by the fact that there was nothing he could've done to prevent it.
>>
>>743275086
Yeah it probably would. They don't even follow it well.
I think he'd be pleasantly surprised by how much the Chinese love him, though. He's a legitimate sensation over there. You can be as racist as you want, find out you're being worshipped and your opinions are going to change.
>>
>>743286505
Name two stories you consider allegories for racism besides the Shadow over Innsmouth.
>>
>>743286283
because racism in the /pol/ sense is a side effect of being a seething virgin while the actual racist urge is to COLONIZE with your cock
>>
>>743286540
I think he would specifically be embarrassed by the people who play up his racism, especially earlier in his life as a celebration to help justify his own racism. I think he would be much happier at the fact that most people are understanding of his problems, and his modern work isn't censored or held in disregard because of it
>>
>>743286245
>Lovecraft thought he was one of the best

He really didn't. He considered M.R. James, Machen and Blackwood to be far superior to himself.
>>
>>743286645
>and his modern work isn't censored or held in disregard because of it
I don't think you literally could translate any of Lovecraft's good work without the racism.
And when he fucked a jewish girl he didn't write shit worth reading.
>>
>>743286645
I don't think anyone uses Lovecraft's racism as a way to justify their own if anything Bobby Fischer's racism towards Jews is more influential especially because he was an icon that defeated the Soviets in a game dominated by them and was a profound racist towards the wolrdwide Jewry and their globohomo aspirations.

I think the best way to make a Lovecraft style game would be to the opposite of what every game does - which would be make your character strong at the START and then you randomly start losing stats (it's different each playthrough) which leads to certain different outcomes. If you lose intelligence, words start becoming unreadable, if you lose charisma, people start actively running away from you, if you lose agility, the game starts dropping frames, etc.

What do you have in mind when you say add anything new? I'm not trying to pick on you. I think every Lovecraft-inspired work couldn't help themselves but avoid show-don't-tell because of how difficult it is to pull that off. It's much more about atmosphere than anything else, in many of his works, that is. True Detective S01 did it marvelously, but that's it. Almost every other inspired work has to botch the landing/reveal.

He would love the memes and how his moral standards clash with degenerates, and how his truest fans would have to accept him as he was.

Well, in the context of Lovecraft I'd argue that many people who are familiar with his work wouldn't mind because even if it was a dream, it was still very real. The dream world in Lovecraft is an actual place. Bloodborne is kind of similar, but the game also establishes itself as a very dreamlike experience right from the get-go. It's even more on the nose when you enter the Hunter's Dream and see an infinite amount of pillars that exist, an infinite amount of dreams, but it's still a place you can go to and exist in. "It was all a dream" in the context of Lovecraft and Bloodborne doesn't mean it's something we only imagined and thus wasn't real, meaningful or dangerous.

Imagine living in a world in which the scariest things you can think of are either the Irish or Italians or a squid.

Diversity done the modern way where you accidetally end up being more sexist than if you just made the protagonist a guy.
