I think what most people are going for these days with a sense of the uncanny, a creeping feeling of something being sinister and wrong. old slasher icon types aren't really conducive to that. a teen character getting brutalized by a foul mouth bastard or hulking brute is certainly horrifying but it's not really the terror that's en vogue.

So a bit of a moot point imo.On that note I also think there's too much expectation from both writers and audiences that if there's not an undead apocalypse it's not serious enough. Call me a boomer but I think the basic premise of NotD is still the strongest and best to start with: phenomena happens, the dead rise, they're barely functional but they're part of the disaster, and you see how people cope with it.
