"retro" doesn't just mean "old," it also implies a strong sense of being backwards and outdated even in its own time

something that is "retro" now was clunky and jarring even in its own time, but we coped with it because it was the average experience of the time
>>
It was backward on release.
>>
Yes. New games are worse which dates it besides it UI and facial animation fidelity etc.
>>

I don't think many games are worse than Crysis. It was disappointment of the year when it came out. But Killzone 2, Getaway, Motorstorm etc were downgraded around then so the disappointment was shared instead of limited to that worthless pos.

Wow you just reminded me of the first trailer for motorstorm which looked great. It was still pretty good though.
>>
I would spend hours watching videos about crysis mods, then I got to play it and dropped it in less than an hour

Far Cry 1 and 2 are Retro, Crysis is more modern by design decisions.
>>
>>743279627
It is but because they thought that single core CPUs was going to be the future.
The game run in old ass 19 years old tech
>>
>>743279627
Yes. Because the world has abandoned good engines.
>>
>>743279627
Absolutely disagree. Without modern ideas of what feels "clunky", older games just felt like... games. It's all relative, and will remain relative.
It's just that the contemporary perspective on how games ought to feel has been barely moving for well over a decade now, so retro has also advanced slowly for that period.
>>
>>743279627
Yeah, any game more than 15 years old is retro.
>>
>>743280308
Other way around. Crysis is even toggle iron sights. Far Cry 2 is a good game, it is also a free roaming game as opposed to a corridor shooter like Crysis.
>>
According to /vr/'s revised rules it is which I personally find hilarious
>>
>>743280595
Any game that was "future proofed" fifteen years ago for a future that still hasn't arrived is retro. It was built on assumptions about where the industry was going that LOOKED perfectly sound in its time, and yet they weren't. What does that indicate? A change in the direction of the industry since it came out.
>>
Always was. It was behind the times. Modern Warfare made it look like utter shit.
>>
>>743280595
making /vr/ doomed /v/ to be the normalcattle board, and /vr/ itself is little more than a contrarian board

though now that 4chan is all thirdies this may have just been inevitable
>>
Bioshock was impressive. Crysis wasn't.
>>
>>743280572
are you retarded? far cry 1 and 2 are about as corridor-shooters as there can be and only pretend to be a free-roaming game, Far Cry 3 is where the series really had its kickstart into modernity with true sandbox environment, just because the road to another corridor is just another corridor doesn't make it a free-roaming game.
>>
>>743280875
bullshit
>>
>>743281078
Have you even played Far Cry 1? It has huge open levels. Not open world but a far cry from corridors. It has some of those too, but it's half at most maybe less.
>>
Convince me to not buy the 2022 remasters. They each say they're fully functioning on Deck.
