Kinda ironic huh

how do all these 30+ year old men still have hair
>>
>>743279958

John Carmack = The smart guy
John Romero = The prima donna guy
Tom Hall = The creative guy that was mostly ignored from Doom onward. Left and joined the Developers of Incredible Power and made Rise of the Triad.
Adrian Carmack = The art guy
Kevin Cloud = the other art guy
Jay Wilbur = the manager guy

They were just a bunch of cool guys at the beach. Who made a bunch of cool Shareware games.
>>

>how do all these 30+ year old men still have hair

It was 1992. They had less micro plastics in their bodies as well as less wifi, bluetooth and other frequencies floating around their heads.
>>
>>743279958
The lives these guys lived in the heyday was the PEAK of vidya and nerd culture. Holy SHIT Masters of Doom is comfy as FUCK. Their lives during the development of Wolf 3D, Doom and Doom 2 was a literal fucking wet dream.
>>
>>743282081
Wdym? I'm 35 and still have a full head of hair. What's YOUR excuse?
>>
>>743279958
A bunch of washed up one hit wonder hacks?
Gaymers are the lowest of the low, the bottom barrel of scum. Their worship of a bunch of retard who code stuff has resulted in the absolute state of "le vidya auteur" shit we're in now.

uhhh where are the 7 layers of managers? where are the clown haired bitches and trannies who make every workplace interaction extremely uncomfortable? Where are the producers coming in to set extremely tight deadlines to satisfy their cocksucking shareholders!? WHERE ARE THE FUCKING INDIANS WHO CAN'T CODE FOR SHIT AND STINK UP THE OFFICE BREAKROOM WITH THEIR NOXIOUS CURRY ODOR!!!??? MOOOOOODDDDDSSSSS!!!!!!!!
>>
>>743284615
showcase your work then if you think you are so heckin' based and capable programmer that you could outdo 80s to 00s programmers, you have one month to program a demo and release it on /v/ using a programming language you have never used before (lua or ruby), you can't buy assets or get someone to work on it, you have to do all the art, music and game yourself.. .oh what's that not enough time? not enough talent? lmao.

>So Mr. Shekelberg we noticed that you are having a poor quarter
>Don't worry, we laid off one employee, so we're cutting costs and are forward thinking.
>Just one? Well that's not reassuring.
>Stock dips.
vs.
>So Mr. Shekelstein we noticed that you are having a poor quarter
>Don't worry, we laid off one thousand employees, so we're cutting costs and are forward thinking
>WOW, that's very reassuring, I'm sure you can pull through then.
>Stock rises

It's a performative numbers game for the stock market and it gives middle managers and consultants more peons to play with. It doesn't matter if 90% of their employees aren't used productively and just add more unnecessary overhead.

based, I came here to post my favorite jew too
>>
It outright isn't realistic if you are looking to make a game beyond a certain level of standard. When the overall scope of the project reaches a certain point you just can't get far without more manpower.

There was another guy at id: Dave Taylor who wasn't in the picture because he was 5 minutes late to the photo shoot. He programmed the sound systems, the level transitions, automap and network chat systems in Doom and the sound system and TCP/IP in Quake. Apparently, he would play Doom so much as they worked on it he passed out on the floor from motion sickness and the dudes at id put crime scene body tape around him when he did that. they got him a couch when Doom made dividends upon dividend in revenue. good lads.

anyways, he left after Quake and made Abuse with his new company Crack dot Com and was going to make Golgotha but the company closed down shortly after. Kinda sad, but due to him being a big Linux and open source fan, you can still play these games on modern systems (although Golgotha isn't even finished).

id's magic came from all the cool dudes working in it at the same time on cool shit that they loved and wanted to show to the world. I wish modern gaming was able to bring that to the forefront again. I'm not sure about Japan and europe (I know Japan has a decent AA scene going on but I'm less sure about Europe), but we had that in America until the end of the 7th gen and ever since the AA/indie company full of nerds became a thing of the past, gaming has suffered dearly for it in terms of making games that are creative, innovative and stand the test of time.

He looks like he wandered into the shoot and photo bombed it right before the camera went off. Also like he's not having any fun there at all.

Because I don't want my games to look like this.
>>
>>743297187
Yeah, but the problem with games looking less like that is it needs more manpower, and more money. Relationships start getting strained. Bridges are burned. Eventually, for better or worse, you become Rockstar.

Man, to have been 20 in the 90s instead of 6. To have stayed up for days eating pizza and chugging Mountain Dew with my bros, breaking technology barriers and getting stupid rich off it. Half coherent, sleep deprived, while newest golden age Simpsons broadcasts somewhere in the background. Damn. I mean, goddamn.

The only problem is I'd be pushing 60 right now.

This is Black Flag after a show in 81

No video game should have more than 10 (actual) developers. Yes, you'll probably need someone to clean the office, an accountant, maybe a lawyer, things like that. You might also need to hire an actor to do some voice work here and there, or perhaps hire a famous artist to add their touch to your product and make things more appealing, and so on. But these aren't direct developers.
The people literally working on the game, programming, balancing, level design, etc., can’t exceed 10 (which is already too much, by the way).

>To have stayed up for days eating pizza and chugging Mountain Dew with my bros, breaking technology barriers and getting stupid rich off it
You wouldn't be doing any of that.
Even during your so beloved "golden age" you still would probably find a way to stay stuck inside a basement complaining about your life and how the previous generation was so much better.

There's an NES with one of those official arcade sticks, running what looks like SMB3...
The first episode of Doom 1 shows clear influence from SMB3 in the way secret areas are presented. For example, in level E1M2, the secrets not only give you a reward but also open up new areas to explore, with unusual things you don't normally see, like a chainsaw on top of a pillar that you can lower with a switch. Or secrets within secrets.
For anyone who's played SMB3, this is a constant feature of the game, and it was incredibly satisfying to be in a level you already knew well, only to suddenly discover a new area with different geometry and unusual things you'd never seen before...

john carmack had just managed to create smooth scrolling platformer engine for the pc, and their first thought was to sell that ability to nintendo with their own port of super mario brothers 3. so in this picture they're in the process of making that game, using the original nintendo game as a reference. this fell through and they instead made commander keen.
