It's that it's too direct of one and repeated the mistakes of its origins without really understanding how to step forward in any competent way. Kind of like Shenmue 3, except in that case they also lost the Virtua Fighter-lite combat system entirely so it was extra fucked. It says a lot that Replayee reviewed a fair bit better on the principle of quality of life, though I still say the Yooka games are kinda bland for ideas/visuals.

The amount of pagies handed out being tripled means you can skip a massive amount of objectives since you can have all worlds unlocked by the time you hit the second. The placement of collectibles wasn't tweaked enough so you still have massive stretches of nothing with 3-5 things tucked in corners. The new final battle is worse for different reasons and the entire game ends really abruptly.

Rare because they're retarded, after the reaction to Nuts and Bolt they thought no one wanted more Banjos, in general they believe that platformers where you collect little things can't work for modern audiences. Microsoft because they're retarded, and in recent years they've given all their studios creative freedom, so Rare decided to do something else. Plus, Microsoft doesn't know who to entrust the IP to, and I think they know it'll never sell $50 million, so they don't care anymore.
