Kinda, yeah. While they cover the gist of the exact same core story, there's a metric ton of meta narrative and context along with either extensive foreshadowing or straight up spoiling later plot points and twists because it's written like a story that knows people have pop culture osmosis for the original. It's mainly for people with a long time interest in the OG, and honestly doesn't do much for folks who don't.

Yes, Remake ecpects you to be familiar with the og, Advent Children and Crisis Core. When Sector 7 plate falls, a black-and-white toy cat with a crown and a cape appears and does the "Nooooo!". If you are not familiar with OG you will be asking yourself what and why.

In Shinra HQ character from CC recognizes Cloud and says he's going to find their common friend and Cloud hurries the team away. You need to know Cloud's past and CC to understand.

One of the final boss forms are characters from Advent Children trying to ensure their future will happen. Party gets short visuals from late game of OG during the fight and RedXIII explains the meta purpose

It's not a remake. it shares nothing in common with FF7.
1. since it's set in an alternate multiverse and the entire plot is predicated on FF7 already having happened and you having already played it.
2. Not even a single location or scenario has been recreated. properly there's fuckloads of missing content and areas too.
3. The characters are braindead timeline clones. They are literally and canonically not the FF7 characters. Their designs are unfaithful, They speak in autism and anime grunts and their IQs are about 80 points lower than the OG cast.

There is no such thing as a "remake" that doesn't actually feature a single character from the original game.

every main plot beat and the whole subversion cringe they fail to execute is reliant on you first having played FF7.
Many emphasized scenes in the game mean you also need to play cringe of cerberous, Crisis core and advent children.

This incoherent slop was not made to be understood by a person whos never played FF7. So much of it is just referential it doesn't even work as a standalone story.

You need to get into theorycrafting youtube. Stop caring about the story being "good" or "bad" and watch people talk about the lore for a few hours.
Soon you won't actually care what is happening in the plot anymore and all that matters is what it adds to the lore.

For example Nero showing up in Remake is not good for the story, but it IS good for the lore and the theories.
Once you're a fan of FF7 theorycrafting literally everything that happens in the story, no matter what, is good - because it expands the lore. You can apply this to all the FF games and suddenly "bad writing" or "plotholes" simply disappear.

It's been ages since I've liked a Final Fantasy, and unfortunately all the stuff outside of the 7R games have done nothing to inspire confidence that "they're back".
It'll likely just be all shit again after the 3rd game is done.
