I only started player after release, but I believe that Blue Archive wasn't very popular immediately on launch, precisely because the first several story chapters aren't amazing. But the story and events got really better over time.It was also noteworthy for being one of the few high profile gachas that was happy. At the time, all the more popular gacha were gritty titles with lots of suffering, so it kinda stood out.
