A fundamental aspect of good game design is that the game recursively teaches the player to play the game in fun way in a way that is fun.
Mario 64 rapidly begins conditioning the player from the moment where they start pawing at the controls in exploratory play, the fact that jumping offers immediate feedback and positive reinforcement for the triple jump really reinforces that you should be doing it, not just sporadically, but with intentionality in order to have fun.

A lot of games make the assumption that the player already knows how games work or they bind "fun" actions to something other than the face buttons, so they fail at this task. Any game where the face buttons are almost exclusively for menu shit, toggles, etc. are failures of game design.
You may hate to hear this, but the best game design is like teaching a class of children competently.

Its on the devs to make it so the player cannot progress without doing left.
Players will by their nature do two things, take the path of least resistance, and optimize the fun out of a game.
Therefore the devs must design their game so that doing the bear minimum correctly is still fun and playing at a complete level of game mastery and metaknowledge is still fun.

If that was the case, right would be spamming long jumps, which is as fun as doing left.

Left: Amazing feeling mechanics that allow freestyle play and has a high skill ceiling.

Right. Cartoon game for kids with under-developed mechanics.

They're the same.
