Why did early 3d games have such a soulful look?
white people with passion made them
I remember at the time the boomers were complaining about 3D, saying that it would age horribly and we'd all have nostalgia for the beautiful timeless spritework of 2D games, while nobody would look back fondly on early 3D, which at the time would come to look dated within a year or two of release. They'll make this thread for today's games one day, too. They'll ask what happened to the minimalist UIs, and the gacha games, and why did live services die out? And for a moment, you'll think they're insane, until you remember that whatever's come to take their place is even worse than what we have now, and that what we have now is the best they'll ever know.
>>743287709Ultra-widescreen aspect ratio is not soulful, sorry.
>>743289402Early 3D did age horribly, just look at how fucking ugly Quake is vs how beautiful Doom is
>>743290042Quake is beautiful though you tasteless faggot.
>>743290139Being a Quake fan is such a humiliation ritual, looking forward to the next Quakecon being all about Doom once again :DD
>>743287709It hadn't become standarised yet so everyone had to use their creativity.
>>743290248I gotta get around to playing mm6 one of these days
>>743289191no no that cant be it
wypipo
>>743290248This game is a great kidnappig simulator.
>>743287709it's the um.. powerofyou know...white people
>>743287709Here is the simple not very complicated or glamorous reason. With early 3D you basically just couldn't do any post-processing effects. This meant that textures simply had to do all the work much like 2D games.Basically early 3D games (and all 2D games) are just a traditional art form (more or less painting) turned into a game. 2D games are just normal painting and 3D games are like painting a sculpture/diorama and when you do this well basically you just have to be good at art and there's no way around it hence the games look good.
>>743287709That game looks like shit though, especially when you've seen the first game.>>743290443Same, I'm waiting for the open source re implementation, but it's targeting MM7.>>743291018It's a shame that these games died out, there's a mountain of potential here that will never be realized.
>>743289402Nobody misses the grpahics of fhe brown and bloom era and it was 20 years ago now
>>743289402fax, watch as many vid essay youtubers complain about no gacha and bad ui/ux design (non-minimalist) in the future lmao
>>743287709What game?
>>743291856Lands of Lore 2 (LoL1 is a much better game)
>>743291528playing fallout 3 for the first time right now and good god it's so ugly, way uglier than 1 and 2
>>743291528We have zoomers being nostalgic for brown and bloom all the time in this board. Are you new here?
>>743291093Half of your screenshots have anti-soul gas effects even back then.
>>743289191>>743290548The people who made the games weren't lowercase typing basement dwellers who spend their time on 4chan making culture war posts with no punctuation in them, that's for sure.
>>743293331Someone was trying to pull that shit on /vr/ waxing nostalgic for brown and bloom saying "they literally don't make games like that anymore" in an attempt to convince them to allow gen 7 on that board. Thankfully the thread was deleted.I worry for how much /vr/ is going to go to shit when those games actually are allowed. I hope it won't be any time soon.
>>743293584/vr/ should never have allowed 3d games.
>>743293584/vr/ has already been massively shit because of gen 6 fags who can't stay on topic, don't see how it can get any worse
>>743293657>don't see how it can get any worse
>>743293358Almost all of those screenshots have some shitty emulator filter applied to them because nobody actually plays games in their original form anymore
>>743290042I like Quake better than Doom actually.
>>743293880No they don't, and it doesn't have much to do with it anyway. My point is people love to complain about "anti-soul gas" or "post-processing" as if that's the culprit, when many older games had those too. The answer is always pic related combined with nostalgia for being young. There could be new games made in the style of the old ones, and people would complain that they're tired of soulless low-effort retro slop instead, because they're still old, bitter and tired and have seen everything there is to see.
>>743293457lol niggercattleMIGA!
>>743289607The GOG version of Lands of Lore 2 includes integration with glide/3dfx, which allows widescreen resolutions. So you’re basically running it through two emulators; glide and dosbox, at the same time.
>>743295176>defends demakes
>>743287709Many of them have this "handmade" look, like simple dioramas, while the more modern ones are basically 3D objects thrown into the scene indiscriminately so that every centimeter of the screen is filled with some kind of asset, with 3D artists treating the scenes as if they were garbage dumps and the assets as if they were the garbage itself.
>>743295294I think your brain and/or your LLM is malfunctioning if that's your understanding of it.
>>743287709Simpler lighting model required artistry to look presentable. Now your average video game artist is more technically proficient than the old masters but with zero aesthetic sense. However with an RTX card it can be made somewhat presentable through brute force graphics faggotry. Also art is valued even less in society now, so talent pool decay.
>>743287709 (OP)my personal take on this is that simple geometry is pleasing to the brainas graphics improved so did the complexity of game environments, pure flat surfaces became less common, and environments full of assets/clutter became popular, which the brain finds more anxiety-inducing as there's more information to processit becomes more laborious to process the environment and feel a sense of comfort from knowing there is a lack of threats
>>743295389The board is unfortunately turgid with that kind of person, they don't want to engage with any actual discussion so they just throw out a few buzzwords and all it a day. Mind you I think the overlap between people who cry about "retro slop" and the people who make threads like this one is actually pretty small, most of us are out there actually playing those retro style games because we're aware there's a vast assortment of games out there and games we like are still being made. It's just a subsection of jaded people who don't want to do anything anymore who just sit around and complain all the time.Since you mention LLMs I'm tempted to get into how that Renoir quote is also a good explanation of why AI will never succeed, because it's so focused on chasing realism, but that's starting to veer away from the subject of the thread.
>>743296598>picI feel like for me the ideal would be some middle ground between the two, just a little bit of tasteful clutter wouldn't hurt
>>743287709No dust and fog, more colors than brown and gray.
>>743293457It must sounded clever in your head
>>743295294Actually Jean Renoir makes a point later on that an attempt to recreate the style Bayeux tapestry failed because the 'idea' of how to do it was lost. The whole interview is insanely interesting because it shows that progress of technology causes art stagnation due to pursue of the realism while primitivist movements at best are larping trying to capture the spirit of the old low tech stuff without understanding it. Right now we have a lot of people that are still alive that can at least teach how limitation breeds innovation/soul. The only issue is that people don't want to listen or the tools we get (UE5/6 for example) drives people into more realism by default. Which means they have to rely on self-made solutions that often takes more technical prowess and work than putting shit together in Unity.
>>743297983>>743298721Nice to see there are at least some real people left here, and cultured enough to recognize Renoir. Lately it feels like half the threads on here are just disingenuous LLM/discord/marketing raids.Obviously devs can have self-imposed limitations to mimic the old games, but nostalgia for the simpler and carefree days is fundamentally impossible to replicate, so trying to analyze and complain about what's wrong with modern games is pointless if you're just going to kneejerk dismiss everything anyway due to failing to fulfill the latter, which will always happen. All you can do is enjoy what there is to enjoy or lose yourself in the classics instead of being bitter. But you might be right that the overlap is small, and I've fallen into the trap of thinking everyone is the same, one voice. On a more positive note, I'm really looking forward to About Fishing. I deliberately didn't try the demo, but from my impressions I think and hope it is the kind of game where they have a greater understanding of things, instead of a "larp" of just throwing a PSX filter over everything.
