What can the next Smash game do to still be interesting after Ultimate?

My idea is to return to just Nintendo franchises, but the gameplay will be a 3D brawler like Powerstone, and there's an open world singleplayer campaign. It would be presented just as a spinoff unless it becomes popular and does well. Just a Mario Kart World type of a take on Smash Bros for this generation, you can always continue to play Smash Ultimate after all.

As characters take damage they progressively devolve into their retro forms with each threshold resulting in an older form until they get ko'd and their spirit regens. Their movesets change accordingly (TotK Link has upb cieling warping, OoT Link has spin attack, etc)

Focus on new stuff. Ultimate has a LOT of content, but A LOT of it is recycled from previous entries. I think without DLC it only had 3 actually new stages.

- Cut the roster bloat. Lots of characters are only in the game because they were in previous Smash games or because they had a new game near the release of a Smash game.
- Returning characters should have updated movesets. Mario should not be using the FLUDD still. Ganondorf should have a brand new moveset. Etc.
- No returning stages except Battlefield and Final Destination
