The budget for Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within was 137 million US dollar back in 2001, adjusted for inflation that amount would be 260mil~

That's enough budget for one Supergirl (2026)! Or half a Cyberpunk 2077!
>>
Spirits Within would make a cool game. Open world where you have the shield city as a base and then pilot hovercrafts out into the wastelands to collect plants and fight phantoms.
>>

It should have been a game!
>>
>>743297536

a final fantasy game even
>>
>>743297356
that's insane, did FF sell that well back in the day?
>>
>>743297356
I forced my father to watch this with me on a sunny summer afternoon.
>>
>>743297356
Hilarious how Sakaguchi directed an actual movie before Kojima
>>
>>743298958
It did sell well, and perhaps that fueled the arrogance and delusion of japanese boomers to do really retarded things, like trying to push the idea of creating a digital actress they could licence to other people (an idea they would try to revive with Lightning years later)

kwab

>>743297356
I liked it.

I have only seen it once a very very long time ago, and I don't remember much about it. But I don't remember it being that bad, though I was never a Final Fantasy fan myself and only found this film accidentally.
>>
The movie was the coolest shit back in the day.
Hope they made profit at least.

I mean they already had the CG movie pipeline, wonder why they didn't make move movies right after that.

>creating a digital actress they could licence to other people
kinda insane kinda ahead of it's time, they are doing something similar with AI generated 'people' today
>>
>>743297356
The bluray of this movie still looks good compared to modern 3d animation.

Bait used to be subtle.

What, you don't like 12 fps Nigger-man and Homies rap music videos?
>>
All I remember from the movie is that it was really gray. Like yeah, the world had kind of gone to shit, but even then the color palette felt really dull.
>>
>>743297536
>>743297630
so... why it wasn't?
>>
>>743299006
Was Kevin Nash raped that same day?
>>
I wish they made a movie sequel to FF8 instead of this. It would've made more sense at the time and actually be FF instead of some scifi shit. They could've also reused FMV assets to save money.

That's modern FF with their shitty fetch quests.
>>
>>743299112
Fucking Hayter acted and directed a movie before Kojima. Hayter even did the screenplay for the first X-men movie.
>>
>>743299396
That was not bait on my part, I genuinely do not remember pretty much anything about the film, but I also don't remember it being particularly bad. But that may just be because it didn't leave enough of an impression on me to even remember it.
>>
>>743297356
Pretty crazy how this movie came out a week before Final Fantasy X first released in Japan and you wouldn't even guess they were related if they didn't slap "Final Fantasy" on the movie title.
>>
>>743299290
Half the final fantasy fans were mad it had nothing to do with the games. My cousin who was 10 at the time figured that out from the trailer.
>>
I saw this in theaters as a kid and quickly fell asleep during it. Was thinking of giving it a watch since I've now played FF I through X. Too bad it made Sakaguchi step down from being head of FF, I wonder how FF would be now if he kept directing a few more.
>>
Ironically all they had to do is make an FF11 or 12 that looks like the movie and it would have sold billions.
It's so weird how they failed to capitalize on FFX's success.
>>
>>743297356
Remember, before anyone claims that SE is the root of evil and that squaresoft did no wrong, they were the same people that spawned this pieces of shit.
In fact, you can trace A LOT of things back to this. For starters, Xenogears had it's second disc cut in half because of this fucking movie.
>>
>>743303297
You mean FF8 fucked with Xenogears
>>
>>743303641
Wasn't it ff7?
>>
>>743297356
I remember this. Was the first movie I went out of my way to research about. So I'd buy magazines that had information about it.

The graphics were mindblowing back then. Nowadays they're a little uncanny valley
>>
>>743297356
Compare that cost to other films in 2001.

How did it cost so much? Not even the actors were real and using computers is free lmao
>>
>>743303097
Because "looks like the movie" in 2001 meant a $100 million render farm, not a PS2 game. FFX already WAS them capitalizing on it, pre-rendered backgrounds/cutscenes and pretty doll people. Then they decided the next mainline should be an MMO because Square was allergic to easy money even before Enix.
