Call of pripyat is somehow the ugliest game of the original trilogy. The remaster does improvw it a bit by making grass draw distance basically infinite and not like OP's pic where even at max you can see grass growing in the distance around you.

It's actually 2009... but yes, it does look OK.
BUT, not only is CoP the ugliest one of the OG games, but its weather effects don't fully "kick in" before the next full day cycle.

The indoor stuff fares better.
And yes - there's OLDER games that still look more visually pleasing.

The Xray games' biggest issue was the very flat LODs of distant surfaces. This made the grass' cut-off point also contrast way stronger against the environment.

Basic environmental texture mods, like the Absoluite Nature, improve this tremendously, without even changing the resolution of textures nor the max distance of grass.

The game was in development since around 1999. The DX9 mode was literally slapped on just a short while before the release, just to see what happens.
The whole game was DESIGNED with DX8 and pre-baked lights in mind. Which is why it looks so good.

I'm not "defending" anything, you dindu tourist. I'm the first one usually screaming at the zoomer Stream-fags to switch to DX9 / 11 mode, since at least STEAM release defaults to DX8. Hell, I made these comparisons back when Obama was your king!

The point still is: DX8 was the go-to default originally, and the GSC's devs made a very clear statement in an interview 20 something years ago, that the DX9 was a quite late addition, and an experimental one at that. But they nailed it so well, that the OG STALKER games are still the go-to argument against the Nvidia spooks' RT shilling.

I agree. Also a great balance between form and function. As time went on past PS360 canned animations replacing responsive mechanics started to become too overbearing.
Pure mechanics allow for unintended interplay, canned animations lock you out of interacting with it in deeper ways than the base function.
But having literally no contextual animations whatsoever can also not feel very satisfying to use, so it's important to strike a balance.
A PS3 game heavily downsampled looks more pleasing to my eye than a PS5 game running at 720p (or less!) and upscaled to 4K or whatever like a lot of modernslop on console.
PS4 games look even better for the most part, but PS5 is when they completely lost the plot.

I miss MT Framework, man. RE Engine CAN look great, just look at that new turn based Monster Hunter. But it usually doesn't, just look at pretty much everything else.
DMC4 looks better than 5, RE5 looks better than 4 Remake, Monster Hunter World looks better than Wilds, it's downgrade after downgrade with the move from MT to RE.
