On the subject, leveling the Def stat increases your Atk stat almost the same amount as leveling the Str stat. Why? Ask the devs, hidden stats area bitch.

My problem was that 1) I messed up so badly on guessing the first enemy's pattern that my Caster was on death's door after literally first turn, and 2) I didn't manage to memorize the entire pattern, so the two inputs I missed were enough to get myself killed.
Now I leveled up, and it's getting easier to grind on the first enemy type. It would've helped to have just that tiny little amount of HP at level 1. Once past that I can grind all I need to, I think.

I think getting your grade up on a stat also affects the overall effect of the stat? Dont quote me on that. I just remember I leveled both str and endurance in my playthroughs, but mostly focused on endurance of course.

For new players, I suggest actually using pen and paper and writing down the patterns. There are enemy types, and certain enemies will be reused later on, with different, but similar patterns. It's also kind of soulful desu, that's how I did my first playthrough and it was super rewarding that way.

And stock up on healing items, chances are you will spam that shit each turn just so you survive boss fights. Caster is a shit servant, but makes up narratively, you will just have to trust me on that.

Remember that you can't save in the arena. Don't grind for an hour then bite more than you can chew and waste it all, anon.
TBF I could never play this without save states. It's madness.
Caster is meant to be played on a second or third playthrough, because you get more pattern reveals the more you kill a mob, and that carries over on NG+.

some level of grind is needed, but I think the areas have recommended levels in them, just follow those and you should be ok

oh and skills overwrite enemy moves unless they also use a skill/NP

Caster is balls-hard and only gets easier in late game when you just nuke things to death. Saber and Archer are easy mode.
I still had to repeat Caster's fight 5 times as Archer because I had no DPS to defeat her before her NP.

You suffer for four weeks with Caster and then steamroll the rest of the game.
You see enemy using a skill? Then just Aphotic Shield.

Admire your patience. I wanted to play with Tamamo first (she's the best) but I ended up having to use savestates before almost every battle in the beginning just to not give up.
It gets easier when healing code casts and money/items start snowballing in.
