If you like puzzle games, math, or linguistics, play The Message from Deep Space
>a weird meteorite hits Earth in 1973
>it's transmitting a radio signal of the same one frequency every 0.8066 seconds
>you and a team consisting of a linguist, an astronomer, a computer engineer and a material scientist need to figure out what it's trying to transmit and whether or not you can communicate with it by transmitting your own radio signals back to it
If you played Chants of Senaar and were disappointed that it was too casual you'll love this

Not sure how 'hidden' we're going but this is the best VS clone I've played and frankly, it doesn't even feel like one. Completely modular vehicles that you upgrade throughout the course of a run to slap on as many weapons as possible and by the end have a gun-bus abomination with swords sticking out of it. Actually manages to scratch my racing game itch with a little eurobeat.

This was once considered one of the worst games ever made by gaming journalists.
>>
>>743337332
reminds me a bit of morrowind. weird as fuck environment and world, you're pretty much let go, almost zero handholding. no quest log, you're supposed to write your own notes (you can make notes in game) and the map is just the map, you're putting your own pins on where are the cities, dungeon, etc. no fast travel other than paying for boat trip.
>>
>>743339408
No it wasn't. Not a good score, but it's far higher then shit like Gollum and MindsEye.

I figure I might as well recommend this if there are any people here autistic about detective games. It's a mystery game that takes place almost entirely within one museum. There's NO handholding, you're free to explore and solve the mystery. It has Golden Idol type mechanics, but overall the game is much harder. The game was a tiny bit too hard for me, but I still finished it and thought it was an interesting experience. I also thought the main characters were unique in a kinda funny way, since they're weirdo paranormal investigators who believe in goblins and ghouls and shit while everyone else in the game is just normal.

File: RawMetal.png (1.01 MB, 1804x715)

Raw Metal could be good to get on a sale. It's a weird mix of genres. It's a stealth/fighter/dungeon crawler. The stealth is (top down MGS style) but when you get caught or do a stealth attack it changes perspective to a beat em up. There's a huge difference between starting a fight against one guy on your own terms and getting attacked by four people at once. It's also a dungeon crawler, where you descend floors and find gear. You can end your run early and bring the gear up to the surface to save it for later, or continue down the mine and hope you reach the end.

Thing is, every game not directly made by Nintendo, OG Atari, Microsoft and Sony is "indieshit". We just called them "double A" back then. All the big studios started as indies before becoming big.

By avoiding them, you're only harming yourself with shit made by jeets and troons that hate you for existing.

Survival horror they'll replicate maybe the length of the games. But Survival horror is very limited in scope in comparison to everything that was releasing back then. I'm not exactly saying designing a good survival horror is easy to make it's just that the development of them is far less complex in comparison to other genres and games releasing simultaneously. Game scopes got massive post PS1.

Yeah every late PS1 or early PS2 game I follow is in development limbo.
Blast Cats, Billie Bust Up, Aeromachina, Class Zero Seven, Abyss x Zero, The Big Catch, Glyde the Dragon are all "coming soon" with no recent updates. Crazy that the era when cost/return ratio for game developement was the best is suddenly so hard to replicate.

3D requires a separate skillset in modeling and an appropriate genre to benefit from it. Some types of games, like platformers or bullet hell types, work poorly with 3D spaces. Souls-type combat with focus on dodges and looking for attack opportunities arguably works better in 2D too because the picture of battle is more precise. For narrative-focused games or puzzles it usually doesn't matter unless you're going for some 3D-specific gimmick.
If you want to go 3D, you first need to know what you're going to use it for, because it's a fat investment for something that could be done much easier.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/2985610/The_Big_Catch_Tacklebox/

This ended up being the best 3D platformer I've ever played. And I try to play every platformer I can for at least 30 mins. I think its difficulty filtered a lot of people on release, but it seems to be slowly gaining ground back through word of mouth.

It's also free which is crazy. They call it a demo or a prologue or whatever, but it still seems crazy that they just dumped this thing publicly on a whim like it was no big deal to release a demo that's better than the full game of every other 3D platformer.

Having said that, I dunno if the full game will live up to this whenever it eventually comes out. It's been delayed like 4 times and it apparently has loads of gay bara shit in it. But even if it's shit I don't think I'll mind, tacklebox will still exist and still be good.

I like it a lot. I get the same feeling I had back in the day, playing with lego and building a truck with a bunch of turrets on. Can't stop giggling looking at my turret-ridden abomination on wheels.
The good: it looks nice (I'm genuinely tired of le ps1 retro and pixelshit); characters feel distinct enough; seems more engaging than your average survivors, because cars handle differently and you need to angle them because guns have limited aiming angle and can block on another.
The bad: OST fucking SUCKS; it's not easy to make something nice-looking, (especially on the forth character) and as usual, the more unlocks you get - less desirable choices you get during runs; there's never enough rerolls... And only four maps.

There's a demo and I highly recommend it.

some people I knew also refused to play 2D games as if 3D graphics automatically make games better

There are a lot of people who think the maturation of video game development is entirely linear, and that many genres or aspects older games are obsolete.
I don't personally get it, either, but I'm also an enthusiast when it comes to games, and it's okay for someone else not to be.

>>743396279
things that work seamlessly in 2D typically do not always translate well into the third dimension.
of course you can make a hyper-casual and lenient 3D platformer that is tantamount to an obstacle course but you aren't going to be able to translate precision platformer difficulty into a game that gives the player a free camera due to the fact that a screen is 2D so you cannot properly convey depth without engineering a solution to fix that without feeling too unnatural (such as drop shadows). the other difficulty is a matter of control rigidity, you want the player to have consistent output and giving them analog control or a free-cam can lead to inconsistent results unless you either make controls digital or put the camera on-rails.
difficult 3D platformers do exist but the kind of difficulty they provide is a different type of game despite the foundation being the same core of running and jumping
in any case, anon's point was about the skillset and time needed to develop for an additional dimension. the art and dev pipeline for 2D and 3D games can be very different from each other.

This game was surprisingly fun. Has a lot of elements from different genres/games that mesh pretty well together, though I do feel like the level design being heavily BoI/Zelda-based makes for a somewhat repetitive experience. Still, the different weapons/characters/artifacts add a strong replay factor, and I also really like the character designs and art in general. Hope the sequel turns out to be even better, though it looks like it might be more of a straight ARPG.

Top kek.
I quite enjoyed Raksasi but the stamina pool and regen is just too low, so you are forced to play super slow on 2/6 stages, perhaps even 3/6 stages, to get items to fix those issues, making the early game too miserable as it's too easy but you're not allowed to speedrun through it.

I think the dev team is a mostly Chinese three-man group and probably doesn't have much in the way of an English media team handling constant updates. I'm sure when they have it locked in with their publisher and/or are entering the polish-up stage, they'll probably make more announcements. For all I know, a dev on the team has an update blog or posts on some other social media platform.

If you want the evil twin to White Knuckle get Idols of Ash. Instead of climbing to the top of a megastructure, you're descending to the bottom of one, and the whole time you're being hunted by a giant centipede monster. Much simpler than White Knuckle, where instead of the roguelite elements, perks, and items, you've just got your grappling hook, but I enjoyed it just as much and it's literally three dollars. The basic idea is essentially the same: get from the beginning to the end without dying. Each time you fail, you restart from the beginning again, having learned a little bit more of the level.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/4450800/Idols_of_Ash/

Once you've beaten the regular version of the game, there's also a nightmare mode that is exactly what it sounds like. It's beatable though, and I really enjoyed it. The game can be very scary, if you're the kind of person who gets scared by vidya. Hearing the sound effects of the monster squishing and clacking its way towards you while you desperately try to find a safe place to lower yourself to is a very similar feeling to some parts of White Knuckle.

Can't post images but people can try Thysiastery.

It is a retro style dungeon crawler where you start as a solo adventurer and get party members while exploring the dungeon.

The good part is randomized skill inheritance system that lets you learn something from a pretty significant skill pool, you will end up with different skills and each one has their own pros and cons. I am not an ultra dungeon crawler fun but I liked that games.
Bonus points for extra challenge modifiers that offer VERY SIGNIFICANT difficulty spike for hardcore enjoyers.

Peaks of yore.

It’s a soulful climbing game where you try to scale large peaks and tough boulders. Using thermos for coffee to get energy, hammering in support pins and even using ice picks. Its awesome. Easy to learn hard to master. Set during 1800s and very comfy.

Has one of the most brutal final levels ive ever encountered in my gaming life.
>>
>>743416057
Nice. I've been playing this lately. It's cool.
>>
>>743363967
Other anon here, I can shill that game for you.

First, the greatest part of the game is that all party member combination are possible.
The cast consist of 3 males and 3 females, you may only bring 3 (they need to split up) and the H scene and event that you can trigger will depend on the member you bring.
That means you can get a harem content (MFF), MMF, and even faggot content (MMM).
Also keep in mind there are 3 females, so even the MFF have 3 variations, MF1F2, MF1F3, MF2F3.

Second, the content itself. Even ignoring the H part above, the plot story and ending itself are also numerous. Each character have their ending, then there's the bad end and true end too, I forgot the actual amount so I can't say the exact number of ending but it's plenty. There's also newgame+ to help you collect stuff faster.

Third, the BGM and music is amazing.
https://youtu.be/ICnkpH7eGaY

Fourth is the story, this part is hit and miss with some people so You'll have to judge yourself.

recently found this game and got absolutely addicted for a few weeks, played around 90 hrs. or so.
Reminded me of the early days of Isaac, where you just wanted to play "one more run" and couldn't put it down.
Also, great artstyle, and the developer is a perv.

Out of all the Xcom clones I've played, the one I thought was most fun for some reason was Hard West 2. It's arcadey and unique. It's focused on killing enemies in long combos. There's an interesting system where you collect poker hands to change the stats of your characters. So if you give a character a straight flush with hearts, they get a ton more health, but if you gave them four of a kind of different suits then you make them a little better at everything. You can give someone an absurd amount of movement points and run like crazy.

Sad day when even the hidden gems threads start to become formulaic, with the same 2-3 people spamming the same games every single time and shitflinging amongst themselves. What a shame...

then don't create daily hidden gems threads of course it's going to get stale if you do that.

seconding Osteoblasts, the dev is currently working on a new game in the same vein after making three unrelated games
