You cannot, I stress this seriously, you CANNOT make a good stealth game, or even a moderately decent stealth game without darkness and shadows.Any game that claims to have "good" stealth that doesn't also let you tackle enemy camps at night time using the shadows to your environment is a SHIT stealth game.Examples of SHIT stealth games that do not allow you to hide in the dark are the Far Cry games, the Hitman games, the Tlou games, the Assassin's Creed (except for Shadows), and Gran Turismo 7.Examples of GOOD stealth games that DO use darkness to make stealth more advanced and serious are the Metro games, the Outlast games, the Splinter Cell games, the Styx games, the Thief games, the Manhunt games, the Intravenous games, the Origami games, and the Tenchu games. Those are games that allow you to hide in darkness and use the shadows to your advantage, anything else is hybrid stealth or pseudo stealth trash.
>>743323801>or even a moderately decent stealth game without darkness and shadows.why? t. intravenous fan
I hate how developers have trouble combining the 3 core stealth mechanics (shadows, environment and social).I replayed Thief Dark Project some years ago and in the Thief Guild level the barrels don't hide you, despite completely blocking line of sight to NPCs. I also played the Dark Mod and a woman on a farm was able to detect me through a tiny hole out of a bunch of stacked up hay blocks. It was so creepy how she stopped her patrol to stare right at me from far away into my hiding place.
>>743325643Because eyesight is an integral part of the human body and is one of the more crucial senses a guard needs to have in order to guard a compound.Darkness provides stealth maxxers with the opportunity to avoid direct contact with the enemy while still technically being hidden in plain sight. You can even try this in real life, and I have already done this myself in real life, the key is to make sure that it is just as dark BEHIND you as it is around you because guards can still see a human sillhouette and will promptly shine their torches at you. Also people generally don't look up at trees when you're above and cctv cameras are only checked by guards when there's an alarm, by the time someone realizes you've stolen something they'll have hours of CCTV footage to comb through, you will be long gone by then.>>743327410Every game has its bugs but that seems i excusable, it's been around for a while, I'm sure there are mods that revamp the geometry of the vanilla maps and how NPCs interact with it.

>>743328916Yes.
>>743323801Everything here is correct. But>and Gran Turismo 7. Kek
>>743328417i dont get why any of this makes it essentialwhy would it be inherently scientifically quantically impossible for a game who plays more around avoiding LOS to be good?
>>743330793Because the very core phenomena of stealth is the art of being undetected by the senses of living beings and without darkness and shadow, avoiding line of sight without creating an unrealistically cover heavy environment is just plain dumb.It can be pulled off but there has to be an ungodly amount of effort put into making it work, like you never see covert operations and ninja shit being done in sunny weather, it just doesn't work.Imagine Thief or Splinter Cell, or even Outlast take place in broad daylight in an empty dirt field with the sun shining brightly like in BattleField 6 at all times directly above, the tension is tone, the feel and the tone is just gone, it's all gone, it's like trying to sneak around in front of normies on a beach.EVERYONE sees you in broad daylight, stealth games cheese this by giving you cloaking technology but then that completely breaks it because you can just spam cloak everywhere. It's akin to playing a racing game but instead of cars you have bicycles, or skateboards, shit just doesn't work, racing games without cars aren't that fun.
>>743328916This game ended right as it felt like it was ramping up to be something good.
>>743323801stealth games suck because they give you too much power or limit you too muchrarely you get a game like thief which gives you plenty of power (rope arrows, moss arrows, water arrows, dagger, sword, blackjack even fucking landmines and shit) but also doesn't limit you too muchthese days not so much, you're always sneaking through an obvious environment without a hundred ways to get through so you can't fail to follow a cherry picked path, enemies are retarded retards that follow thrown objects and don't see obvious tells, and you have equipment or abilities which let you tank attacks and wipe out enemies no problem and when a dangerous foe shows up they're treated like an annoyance instead of a threat or can by eliminated later by +1 your takedown move or whateverthey also often don't limit your supplies, letting you fully restock between zonesyou also have issues with realism, where your silhouette doesn't exist - think of you standing in the middle of a long, straight dark tunnel - you're blocking the light from either end of the tunnel when someone looks through it, which would be 1000% obvious someone was standing in the tunnel even in complete darkness, games don't do this so you can get into retarded situations where you should be visible but you're nota good survival game has a huge environment and gives you good freedom of motion but not weapons or tools to erase or mitigate threats, and should have permanently scaling awareness levels I.E only by being completely silent and never being seen or heard should enemies be relaxed, the moment they start hearing unexplained sounds, footsteps, seeing open doors, broken lights, windows, objects, lights being turned on / off blah blah they should scale their awareness, and being seen and dipping into shadows should not reset their memories 5 seconds latera good stealth game functions akin to a horror game that you're in control of, instead of a typical horror game where you're not in control
