Fandom is just a socialization tool with no connection to the original work. The push towards making the supposed center piece of fandom less and less important is entirely the desired effect for these people. It is the people that will talk you down for sincere love of a work because they only see it as a social club to adopt quirky traits from and meet other quirky fellows. Rinse and repeat forever for all things that are even slightly unique.
