I specifically remember shotgun starting every quake level including expansion packs because i was so used to playing custom doom wads with pistol start in mind. I asked chatgpt and said each quake level has enough weapons in each map to make shotgun start viable but its only possible through a sourceport. So I must have done that, I dont remember it being that insanely hard.

It was mostly because Unreal was the Crysis of its time. It was THE game you used as a benchmark in the late 90s. Also the world looked incredible for the time, but yeah, even back then I hated the combat. Retrospective reviews today by people who love retro games point out how shit the combat is.

I get if you don't like those things, but I'd say you misunderstand combat. The enemies are not really spongy. They're about as tough as you are. And their AI is very active, making it a challenge to aim and move around. So, almost every combat encounter is like a simulated pvp deathmatch. And you can find fast ways of killing enemies after a bit of experimentation.

Any FPS with health regen inevitably sucks dick. CoD is probably the worst with this, since you're basically forced into this stop-and-go gameplay loop down a hallway. After all, if there are no medpacks or armor pickups, there's no need for exploration to find them. Halo is a bit better with this, but I still dislike it for being too slow and for many of the Covenant weapons merely being plasma variants of the standard human guns.
