mostly japanese media coding. so its like a fairy tale so they are all kind of like primordial spirits, a heroic monkey and a dragonesque dragoon and a frog kind of allude to basic spirits and local dieties in swampy grassland japan
To be more like the NES/SNES entries. 6 in particular.

I think it adds to the charm of the game. Some people like to say it's so they didn't have to add black people to the game or some dumb shit like that, but really it stands out into making the world more fantastical than a regular world, and considering that 7 and 8 have pretty limited fantasy races (7 having the Cosmo Canyon Lion-Dogs and the centren and 8 having the sentient rabbit cat people and whatever the guy at Balamb Garden) it makes 9's world stand out.
