It has some good ideas but it's early access from a small team in a genre that lives by labor-heavy content: animating interactions for objects and characters. They scarcely even started on that part until build mode and character creation were both functioning.Also I think most people who outright reject it based on graphical style have allowed themselves to be mindbroken and I'm not even sure exactly by what.

Add some features that adjust the game in similar ways to what The Sims has gained (e.g. multitasking in 4, wants/fears in 2). Just fix the problems. The critical part is not trying to sell endless DLC. The Sims is flooded with trash and it spills out of the stuff packs into expansions. Just have some actual quality control, some actual design consideration when choosing what to add. Also no rabbit hole jobs (perhaps excepting some truly basic entry level shit) and no faggy jobs (you can absolutely have flavor without adding paranormal investigators or whatever the fuck).
