It has always been widely acclaimed and when it finally left gamecube hell with the HD version in steam and newer consoles, it exploded in popularity and led to Resident evil going back to horror.It's no doubt one of mikami's masterpieces and basically what people hopes every remake to be.
The original compliments the remake. The first dog hallway scare is a good example of this. What is a scary moment in the OG becomes a fake-out in the remake. Same with the jewels in the tiger statue, in the remake if you put the colors into it that worked in the OG, you get snakes dumped on you. You CAN play the remake and get the full story/experience but the playing the OG first enhances the experience.
