I played both Hollow Fragment and Lost Song. Why is the Gamerverse 100 times better than the original story ever was? I actually feel like I know these characters after just two games. Yeah the gameplay is mid and graphics could be better but damn, they developed these goddamn characters in full.

Which is unfortunate because the characters are never really allowed to grow or change at all - there's a set guideline for how they are allowed to be written and the writing sticks to it 100% of the time. They are still given more room to breathe than they are in the anime just because they are given a lot more screen time because of how easy and cheap it is to make VN events.

The Gamiverse OG characters tend to fair a lot better, at least in the games they are introduced.

The new game has literally none of this so don't worry you don't have to worry about the future of SAO games at all - the franchise is dead.
