It's pretty good, which is why it is still the foundation of modern controller development over in the VR space. It was let down mostly by developers who didn't know how to use it, it could've used some more time to get a better gyroscope natively and the button arrangement wasn't great, but it was definitely a step forward for controllers from 6th gen to 7th gen.

There's a reason that games on these consoles mostly play themselves.

the xbox controller is basically the dreamcast controller with an extra joy stick

the left joystick is above the d-pad

with the playstation controllers the left joystick is below the d-pad

The Xbox controllers are the worst, by far. They feel like cheap knockoff controllers compared to Nintendo and PlayStation controllers. I have no idea why people ever recommended them besides how they were the only decent plug and play controllers on PC for a while. Now that PlayStation and Nintendo controllers work natively on PC and Xbox is dead there is no reason to ever touch these pieces of shit again.
