You know that feeling when you mod a video game and the vision, internal consistency, and immersion just crumble and the game starts feeling like a bunch of assets manipulated by some random guys?

That's how indie games always felt to me, I can never take them as seriously as professionally made classics, only a handful managed to create a consistent tone to feel like real games, which is why the idea that they're "saving games" never sat right with me, we simply lost this category forever (since new AAA games also fail at this but for a different reason)

Anyone else have this experience? Or thoughts on the phenomenon in general

Oh yeah, the so immersive skyrim.

The only mods anyone should download, should be ones to fix gameplay systems, and to remove non-humans(like Grounded Commonwealth did).

No, being retarded isn't a thing i experience

It depends, if an indie game is an asset flip or has a bad art direction which is common then yeah I agree
A very small subset of indies are actually good, just that you're bound to get a few great ones every year because more than 10k are pumped out yearly or some shit

To me a game has to be on the level of Cuphead or Bastion to escape this feeling, it's extremely rare and not guaranteed even once a year, even Hades fails at this

>To me a game has to be on the level of Cuphead or Bastion to escape this feeling,
do you admit that this is completely unreasonable? cuphead is more aesthetically coherent than the large majority of commercial released games.

Indie games by default come with an amateur understanding of how games are made so they need to overcompensate in obvious areas to make up for the lack of understanding in subtler areas, that's why they're held to a higher standard, though old games had no issues reaching those levels of consistency all the time
>>
A lot of it comes down to all of them using the same engine

Please tell me pics is a real mod. I might actually play Skyrim again just for her.

Any game made after the early 2000s feels like it fails to present a coherent visual consistency, like the assets are just sourced from a generic content mill and stuffed in a cash shop.
Indie games may fail at visual design often, but at least they don't fail just because they need to monetize 1000 sloppa skins.

>implying that any development team after 2002 has more than an amateur understanding of how games are made
"Professional" games need to be held to the same standards.

The same is true of "professional" development, which also mostly uses licensed engines like UE5.

I despise you just for perpetuating the AAA/indie duality and suggesting nothing in-between exists.

there should be a LoK mod for Skyrim
