I actually started playing Daifukkatsu yesterday. It seems it'll be easy to do loop 1 due to the autobombs and hyper cancelling bullets. I'm not sure if I'll make a real effort to do loop 2 or rather try some other game, like SDOJ maybe but I'll think about that after doing loop 1.Anyway, I practiced stages 2 and 3 yesterday, today I'll practice 4 and maybe a bit of 5.

I'd say Space Invaders Extreme is a good entry point, actually, rewards good scoring and chaining while also being very readable at what you can do while also getting considerably harder each time and unlocking even harder stages the more you play and the better you score, very natural progression. It's pretty underrated due to being a DS/PSP exclusive for a long time, which is rare for this type of game, but there's a good PC remaster of it that took parts from both this game and the DS-exclusive sequel.

Is it really that hard to motivate yourself to play a shmup? For me, as soon as I pull off the route I practiced, I am always immediately thinking about "what's next". I try to take a break but I quickly get bored. The only thing stopping me from going even faster is time and energy. I'm a busy person, but even so I have a least an hour or two to play games everyday, and that's enough to get clears. Playing other games does not make me feel "refreshed", it doesn't make me feel less stressed, so I just take care of my responsibility then play shmups. Once I boot the game up that's all I'm thinking about. Even if I'm unsure about what the outcome will be or feel like it will be too much to deal with it just turns out fine and I always make at least a tiny bit of progress.

I noticed this with futari as well, like in stage 4, the timing to pop mantises to get centipedes is different from the 360 and arcade versions as well. Both versions are doable, just be aware of that. I think the steam version is easier, practice in mame, but do full stages and 1cc on steam, that's how I'd do it.

I stopped playing Shmups when I was like 11 because there is a fine line between presentation, power fantasy, risk reward, and progression. When shmups become an incomprehensible mess of bullets that smother the screen, it is no longer a shmup, it is DDR with a joystick, a small margin of error, all the while just holding down the shoot button. More a test of precision and patience than any sort of fun SHOOT EM UP.

The big sadness of these threads is that no one will post gameplay because the community is small enough that any game footage will inevitably be scoured on the handful of shmup discords to find people out. Which leaves the thread in the hands of annoying avatarfaggots and people larping as them.
