Not having a face to show makes games age better as you wont have to see badly modeled, physically ugly, or badly textured faces that immediately fall into the uncanny valley because we all know what people look like under normal fidelity standards.A mask doesnt need to look anatomically accurate, it just needs to be. The imagination can fill in the rest.
